2. Why is a standard measurement system important?
A standard measurement system is important because it allows scientists to compare data and communicate with each other about their results.
Metric System – is a measurement system based on the number 10.

3. Why is a standard measurement system important?
The modern version of the metric system is called the International System of Units, or SI. Prefixes are used to identify larger and smaller units.

4. What are some SI Units of measure?
Length: A meter (m) is the basic SI unit for measuring length.
Many distances can be measured in meters. For example, you can measure your height or a soccer kick in meters. For measuring lengths smaller than a meter you use the centimeter (cm) and millimeter (mm).
For measuring a long distance, such as the distance between cities, you use kilometers (km).

5. What are some SI Units of measure?
Mass: is a measure of the amount of matter in an object.
In SI, the basic unit for measuring mass is the kilogram (kg).
The mass of cars, bicycles, and people is measured in kilograms. If you want to measure smaller masses, you would use grams (g) or milligrams (mg).

Weight is different than mass. Weight is a measure of the force of gravity acting on an object.
The difference between mass

object is not constant. It can
change as a result of different
gravitational pulls.

Volume: is the amount of space an object or substance takes up. All objects with mass whether they are solids, liquids, or gases have a volume.
In SI, common units for measuring the volume of solids include the cubic meter (m3) and the cubic centimeter (cm3). The unit for measuring the volume of liquids or gases is the liter (L).

8. What are some SI Units of measure?
Density: is a measure of how much mass is contained in a given volume. Because density is made up of two measurements, mass and volume, the SI units for density come from the units for volume and mass.

The standard SI unit for measuring density is kilograms per cubic meter (kg/cm3). Other units of density include grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm3) and grams per milliliter (g/mL).

9. Density of Substances
Different substances have different densities.
*Very dense materials contain a lot of matter in a given space or volume, while less dense materials contain smaller amounts of matter in the same space or volume
The density of a particular substance is the same for all samples of that substance, no matter how large or small.
Using Density
If you know an object’s density, you can determine whether the object will float in a given liquid. An object will float if it is LESS dense than the surrounding liquid. An object will sink if it is MORE dense than the surrounding liquid.

11. What are some SI Units of measure?
Temperature: There are two temperature scales that are used in science the Celsius scales and the Kelvin scale. On the Celsius scale, water freezes at 0 degrees and boils at 100 degrees. On the Kelvin scale, the lowest possible temperature is 0 K, or absolute zero. There are no negative numbers on this scale.

Time: is a measurement of the period between two events.
The second (s) is the SI unit used to measure time.
Just like all SI units, the second can be divided into smaller units based on the number 10. For example, a millisecond (ms) is one thousandth of a second.
