Welcome to Abbey Nursery Things you need to know!!

Our Day – Morning children O 8:30 – 8:45 Toast and juice £1 per week O 8:40 Whole class teaching time O 9:10 – 10:25 Child Initiated Learning and adult-led teaching O 10:25 Tidy-up time O 10:30 Family group teaching time O 10:50 Fruit & milk O 11:20 Family group general O 11:30 Children leave.

Curriculum O Follow EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) O Prime areas: Personal, Social & Emotional – helping children to share and play together; helping them to deal with feelings; helping them to become confident. O Physical development – helping them to move confidently on large equipment; helping them to acquire fine motor skills e.g. threading, painting, drawing, writing.

Curriculum O Communication & Language – helping children to develop speech and vocabulary; helping children to understand and answer questions and follow instructions; helping children to sit & listen.

Curriculum O Specific areas – O Literacy – reading stories and talking about them, singing songs and rhymes, early phonic skills. O Writing – encouraging fine motor skills and mark making. Using ‘Talk For Writing’ to model speaking, writing & reading of stories and texts.

Curriculum O Mathematics O Number – helping children to recite numbers in order, count objects and acquire number skills. O Shape, space & measure – playing with shapes, making arrangements, creating patterns, naming shapes.

Curriculum O Understanding the world – talking to children about themselves, their family, friends and the things they do together with their families. O Talking about nature and natural things; looking at patterns, change and our environment. O Technology – using CD players, remote controls, lifting flaps, turning buttons and some computer work.

Curriculum O Expressive Arts & Design – using materials to create pictures and models, responding to music & song. O Being imaginative – role play and immersing themselves in imaginary play.

Fridays O Library Day. O Children are loaned a library book. O Please take care of our books. O Return books every Friday.

Milk and Fruit O All children have milk (or water) and fruit during the day. O This is encouraged as a quiet, social time.

Coats/Waterproofs O Please help your child to put on their own coat. O Children will take off shoes for different activities, please buy easy-close e.g. velcro. (NOT laces or buckles!) O Children will have access to the outdoor area throughout the child initiated learning time, regardless of weather. O We have a full set of outdoor clothing.

Outdoor Learning O We have a vibrant outdoor learning area and children will get dirty. O Mud kitchen, Digging area, Tyres, Wheelbarrows, Logs O We have got tee-shirts & waterproof coats to cover clothing and wellies and we’ll do our best to keep their clothes clean. O Children will be allowed outdoors if they want to go, regardless of the weather.

Uniform O It all looks the same!! O NAME ALL CLOTHING PLEASE!! O Children will get dirty. O Children have accidents – please put spare clothes in your child’s bag each day. O Think about what your child can cope with independently e.g. velcro is easy.

Toilet O Please work on toilet training during the summer if you child is not quite ready. O Encourage your child to wash their hands without help.

Illness O Please phone the school office to report illness. O Sickness & diarrhoea must be 48 hour (2 day) absence. O Please show your child how to blow and wipe their nose.

Parents in nursery O Let’s Do It Days – parents invited to nursery. O Finale Days – parents invited to nursery. O Celebrations – parents invited to nursery. O Achievement assemblies – parents invited to nursery. O Special occasions – parents invited to nursery. O Parents consultations – parents invited to nursery. O WE LIKE TO SEE YOU!

Parents in Nursery O Newsletters. O Look out for a chance to become a governor. O Look out for a chance to join The Friends of Abbey. O Regular ‘wow’ or ‘news’ sheets. O Evaluation sheets. O Letters in children’s bags.

WOW Moments O Not all development is seen in nursery. O If your child does something special at home we want to know. O You will be given regular sheets to fill in at home. O What made you say ‘Wow!’?

Children’s Progress O We maintain a folder called a Learning Journey. O ipad programme that captures moments of your child’s time in nursery. O We build a picture of their development and share with you at parent’s meetings (nursery closed to children). O Development is based on the Early Years Learning Outcomes available on our website.

Health/Family O Make sure that we know any health concerns e.g. allergies. O Make sure we have an inhaler if needed. O Make sure we have an epipen if needed. O If you have a change in family circumstances that we should know about please talk to us in confidence.

Nursery team O Mrs H Lawrence – Assistant Head Teacher for Foundation Stage and nursery teacher. O Mrs M Williamson - Teacher O Miss E Andrews – Learning Support Practitioner. O Mrs V Broadbent – Learning Support Practitioner. O Mrs J Warhurst – Learning Support Practitioner. O Miss R Lewis – Learning Support Assistant.

Family Groups O These are small groups within which teaching & learning takes place. O Mrs Lawrence, Miss Andrews & Mrs Warhurst will have a family group each. O Supported by Mrs Broadbent & Mrs Williamson during the Autumn term O Groups will have animal names. O Group leaders will maintain the Learning Journeys and speak to you at parent's meeting.

Parent’s Meetings O There are three of these during the year, usually October, March and July. O We close the nursery to pupils to allow the key workers to talk to you in detail. O No written reports in FS1 but we give you a copy of the ipad Learning Journey.

Parent’s Meetings O Try to avoid the start of the day unless very important. O Wait 10 minutes until children are in or agree an alternative time.

Parking O DO NOT PARK IN MAURICE ROAD O DO NOT PARK ON ZIG ZAGS O KEEP YOUR CHILDREN SAFE

Admission O Stay & Play – really important so that child is introduced to a new environment. O Stay for the whole of a nursery session. O Staggered intake after that – leave children with staff.
