What they do… Computer programmers meet with managers to determine the purpose of each program. They prepare workflow charts that illustrate the steps in the program. They convert the workflow charts into a coded language the computer can process. They update, repair, and rewrite programs that have problems.

Knowledge… Computer programmers must have knowledge of computer equipment and programming language. Programmers need knowledge of math, such as algebra, geometry, calculus, and statistics. They also need knowledge of the content and structure of the English language for communication purposes.

Skills… Programmers must be able to write computer programs for various purposes. They must be able to communicate information and ideas effectively with others. They must be able to problem-solve to identify problems and find solutions. They must keep up-to-date on new technical information

Tools they use… Computer programmers use Desktop computers Computer servers Mainframe operating systems Various computer languages

Working Conditions Computer programmers usually work in a comfortable office environment. Programmers often work with several other programmers as a team. They usually work 40 hours per week, but may work evenings and weekends to meet deadlines or to fix unexpected technical problems.

Training required… Most positions require a 4-year degree in computer science, mathematics, or information systems. Some entry-level positions require a 2-year degree or certificate. Employers look for applicants who have training, programming skills, and experience.

Who they work for… Computer programmers work in almost every industry including: Software publishers Banks and financial institutions Insurance companies Schools Government agencies Entertainment industry

Income… The average wage for a computer programmer is about $33 per hour. Average income is approximately $65,000 per year. The projected growth for computer programmers is expected to remain steady or decline slightly due to outsourcing jobs to workers in other countries.
