They determine size and arrangement of material and select style, color, and text. They use computer software to generate images, graphs, charts, diagrams, and illustrations. They review, mark up, and assemble final layouts to prepare for printing.

They need knowledge of media communication techniques. They need knowledge of design principles and technical blueprints. They need knowledge of marketing strategies for products.

They must be creative thinkers and critical problem-solvers. They must be able to interact proficiently with computers.

Designers employed by smaller firms may work in smaller, more congested environments. Designers who freelance usually work evenings and weekends in their own offices or studios.

Entry-level technical positions require a 2- year associate degree. On-the-job training for 1 to 3 years is required to advance to higher positions. Experience in marketing and business management is also helpful.
