Adolescent Job Aid. A handy desk reference. Provides health workers with step-by-step guidance on dealing with adolescent patients when they present with a problem or a concern.

Consistent with & complementary to key WHO Guidelines. Integrated Management of Adolescent & Adult Illness Integrated Management of Pregnancy & Child Birth Decision making tool for family planning clients & providers STI & other RTI: A guide to essential practice Precisely spells out what the health workers needs to do if the patient is an adolescent.

What does the ‘Job Aid’ deal with? Adolescent-specific health conditions which have not been addressed in WHO guidelines (e.g. puberty) Some health conditions that not adolescent specific which have been addressed in WHO guidelines, in order to highlight some key dos and don'ts when dealing with adolescents (e.g. vaginal discharge & anxiety)

Presenting complaint or question Each algorithm starts with a presenting complaint or question that by : the adolescents the parent or guardian

Each algorithm has the following columns ASK LOOK/ FEEL/ LISTEN IDENTIFY SIGNS & SYMPTOMS CLASSIFYMANAGEFOLLOW -UP

The ‘classify’ column has three colours RED, YELLOW & GREEN Red signifies a serious condition & requires referral Yellow signifies a condition of moderate severity that the health worker at the primary level may or may be able to manage. Green signifies a normal or relatively mild condition that the health worker at the primary level can manage.

ALGORITHMIC APPROACH TO CLINICAL MANAGEMENT OF Presenting Complaints/ Questions: Parent: Adolescent: ASK LOOK/FEEL/LISTE N SIGNSCLASSIFYMANAGEFOLLOW-UP [1]

1.Each algorithm lists what the referral note should contain (where applicable). 2. Each algorithm is accompanied by information to be given to the adolescent & accompanying adult, Responses to frequently asked questions. REFERRAL NOTE (where applicable) Presenting complaints Finding from the history taking Findings of the examination Classification Reasons for the referral ► INFORMATION TO BE GIVEN TO THE ADOLESCENT AND ACCOMPANYING ADULT. 1.
