Finding Books for Teaching

First, choose how to search If you want books about a particular topic, it is easiest to start with a Keyword Search.

Enter your keywords Remember…keep it simple! Limit keywords to: one word, two words joined by and, or a short phrase!

Results are listed from newest to oldest Click on More Information for details about an item and to see whether or not it is in

Item Information Record N ote the Call Number and Location to help you find the book on the shelves.

Other books nearby on the shelves will be related in subject content.

You can place a hold on books that are checked out…

User ID = student number PIN = birthdate (mmddyy) You will be asked to log in to your Library Account… The Library will contact you when the book becomes available. You can pick up your hold within 5 days at the Circulation Desk.

To find books at a childrens or young adults reading level… Add the terms… Juvenile or Juvenile literature or Juvenile fiction …to your search

To find a book about the Middle Ages at a young persons reading level…

To find a fiction book about counting at a young persons reading level…

To find books about teaching a subject: Add teaching or study and teaching to your keyword search. Examples: explorers and teaching water and study and teaching fractions and teaching painting and study and teaching grammar and teaching

Finding Textbooks The Trillium List Lists textbooks approved for use in Ontario

Searching the Library Catalogue for textbooks If you know a textbook title, search by title.

Searching the Library Catalogue for textbooks on a topic… Combine the subject and juvenile or juvenile literature in a keyword search.

Finding Videos & DVDs Select Visual Materials from the drop-down menu.

Note which library the video belongs to… Nipissing students may sign out videos from the Canadore-Nipissing Library only.

A-V Preview Area Two television/VCR units and a DVD player are located at the back of the Library. Headphones & remote controls are available at the Circulation Desk. Suitable for groups

You can book audiovisual materials for future use… All A-V materials at the Education Centre Library can be booked for use on campus. A-V materials except DVDs and short-loan videos can be booked for use on placements. Please see the Circulation Desk staff to arrange bookings.

Public performance licensing The Librarys audiovisual materials are licensed for public performance on campus. If you show videos to your classes during placement, it is your responsibility to ensure that the local school board has classroom performance rights. See Copyright Matters for more information.Copyright Matters

Ontario Curriculum Documents are available in the Library Ontario Curriculum Guidelines are the Ontario standards for what is taught in each subject at each grade level in Ontario schools. Exemplars are Ontario Ministry of Education documents that provide guidelines for the grading of student work.

Ontario Course Profiles For Grades 9 to 12 Written by teachers Specific to subject, grade and course. Includes outcomes, assessment strategies & standards, instructional materials, etc.

Curriculum Planning Units Sample curriculum units created by writing teams from public and Catholic school boards For teachers of Grades 1 to 8.

Borrowing Your borrowing limit is 30 items in total, which can include: * 3 each of videos, DVDs, CDs & audiobooks * 2 each of short loan materials, course reserves & posters Or, you can take all 30 in books!

My Account is your personal Library Account You can: – check what you have out – check when your books are due – check the status of holds youve placed (and cancel holds) – renew books online

Access My Account from the Library Catalogue. To log in: your user ID is your student number your PIN is your birthdate (mmddyy).

Extended Loans for Education Students The Library will extend the loan period for materials you borrow for placement. This excludes DVDs and short-loan videos. Please contact the Circulation Desk to renew materials if necessary.

Overdues... Overdue notices are sent to Nipissing accounts only (so please check your !) There is a 24-hour book drop outside the Library. Please ensure that all your Library materials are due back after your placement.

Reciprocal Borrowing With your Nipissing student card, you can borrow books from other university libraries and return them here. You can also return Nipissing books at other Ontario universities.

Course Reserves To find the list of items on Reserve, click on: Course Reserves on the Library home page, or Reserves in the Library Catalogue

Search by instructor name, course number or course name.

Two types of Reserves… Reserves at the Circulation Desk are loaned for 3 hours. Just bring the call number to the Circulation Desk and we will get the Reserve for you. Short Loan Reserves are loaned for 2 days and are kept on the regular Library shelves.

Click on Details to see if the item is available to sign out…

Check the record to see where the Reserve is kept and if it is available… In this example: One copy is a 3-hour Reserve held at the Circulation Desk. Another copy is a 2-day Short-loan Reserve. 3 copies are regular-loan books.

Finding Articles You have access to thousands of electronic journals, magazines and newspapers through the Librarys database subscriptions. Journals in paper format or microform are kept in the Periodicals Collection at the back of the Library.

To search for articles, click on E-Resources on the library home page.

Select Education from the list of subject areas to access relevant databases.

Searching for articles in Professional Development Collection… Break down your topic into its main components.

This search resulted in too many articles! We can narrow our search by: –clicking on one of the subject headings listed, or –adding another search term to our original topic

By adding another search term, we get fewer, more relevant results.

To find more information about an article, click on the title

This record has an abstract, or summary of the article. To get the full article, click on the PDF or HTML Full Text links. Or, click on If the article is available in another database, will link you to it.

Printing in the Library You can print from your laptops to the Library printer. You need value on your student card. – Use the Cash Card Manager near the Circulation Desk to add value to your card. Cost is 10¢ per page.

A-to-Z Periodicals is a list of all the journal, magazine and newspaper titles available through the Library in any format.

Enter the title of the publication and click on GO…

This journal is available in 3 electronic databases and in paper.

Off-Campus Access to E-Resources Username = first part of your Nipissing address Password = birthdate (mmddyy)

The Library has four microfilm readers… Located in the Periodicals Area at the back of the Library. The newest will scan documents and create PDF files.

RefWorks is a web-based tool that can help you manage your research. Import, store and organize citations and references in your RefWorks account. Format in-text citations and bibliographies for your papers.
