STUDENT HANDBOOK! What every student needs to know at Discovery Middle School

ACTIVITY ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS (p. 6) Students may become ineligible to participate due to... unexcused absences unsatisfactory academic progress behavior during the school day, practice, and competitions severe behavior may result in immediate suspension from activity

STUDENT DISCIPLINE POLICY (P. 8) The purpose of the policy is to ensure students' safety, guarantee a quality educational experience.

Code of Conduct (p. 8) Respect Responsibility Kindness Honesty Fairness

Rules of Conduct (p. 8-13) Truancy (being absent without approval) and Unauthorized Absences Students are required to attend school Absences must be excused by parents/guardians Students are responsible for making up missed work Students will be disciplined for excessive tardiness

Damage to School or Personal Property Vandalism pg 9 Purposely damaging property is NOT acceptable For example, do not kick your locker!

Theft Having something that doesn’t belong to you Assault Doing something to intentionally scare someone else Aggravated Assault Doing something to intentionally scare someone else that harms them physically

Exceptions pg 10 Anyone who accidentally has a weapon will not be disciplined if he/she immediately takes the weapon to the principal (or other trusted adult) See pages for additional exceptions Consequences for Weapon Possession Use/Distribution for Non-Students May be fired Will be asked to leave school property Law enforcement may be notified See pages for definitions of weapon, firearm, gun, bodily harm, etc. Bus Discipline—students may lose the privilege of riding the bus Failure to Identify Oneself

Unacceptable Behavior includes (N. pg 13) Anything that disrupts others' learning Anything that endangers others Violating the discipline policy Giving false information or not sharing information needed to solve an investigation Violating a law

Disciplinary Action (p. 13) Includes but is not limited to... Detention Loss of school privileges Removal from class Suspension Expulsion

Disciplinary action will be taken on a case-by-case basis depending on the severity of the behavior, age of student, etc. Law enforcement will be notified when laws are broken.

Removal from Class (p. 14) Students may be removed from class for Disrupting others' learning Endangering others Violating discipline policy

Suspension, Exclusion, Expulsion, Pupil Fair Dismissal Act pg 15 Pupil Fair Dismissal Act-details, pag 15 Parents will be notified While suspended, excluded, or expelled students are not allowed on school property or will be treated as a trespasser

Lockers (p. 16) Lockers are school property Locker searches may be performed at any time—no notice, no permission from student, no search warrant Personal possessions in lockers will only be searched if the school has reasonable suspicion School will notify students if their lockers have been searched

Lost/Destroyed/ Damaged Textbooks (p. 17) Students are responsible to pay for lost, destroyed, or damaged textbooks The cost depends on the damage and value of the book See pages for possible disciplinary actions for different violations

Hazing Policy (p. 22) The purpose of this policy Is to maintain a safe learning environment. Hazing is harassing,humiliating, or abusing someone as a way of initiating them into a student organization. ANYONE (teachers, principals, students, volunteers, etc.) who participates in or tolerates hazing is subject to disciplinary action. Reporting Procedures (p. 23) Report hazing immediately to a trusted adult. Grades or assignments cannot be impacted by reporting hazing. School District Action (p. 23) The school district will investigate all reports of hazing and will take appropriate disciplinary action if necessary. Reprisal (p. 24) The school district will discipline anyone who seeks revenge against someone who reports a violation of the policy.

Violations of the rules may lead to no use! 5. The teacher decides when you need to use your device. 6. Device used for education purposes ONLY! 7. You cannot record or take pictures and post them! 8. No private networks - you must use 206guest!
