What does responsibility look like? Example: Being on time Having materials Starting Bell work after entering the class

Example: Greet your peers Say “Hi” to people that you sit near Ask Questions

Example: Be kind-no name calling Follow directions Pay attention in class

Example: Include everyone Be patient Encourage your peers

The classroom? The lunchroom? The hallway? The stairs? The nurse’s office? ALL students and staff in the building? (see the next slide to check your answer …)

The answer is… YES!

Do what is expected. Do it the best that you can. (Act in a chivalrous manner)

Be on time to class Be prepared for class Class discussions Handing in assignments Finding out about assignments when you are absent Other classroom procedures and protocols

Each and every Colony Middle School Student has the ability to be chivalrous; to do what is expected to the best of their ability.

What if someone messes up? What happens then?

“Perfection” is impossible Making mistakes does not make you bad!

Consequence vs. Punishment Consequence: (example) Being sent to your room for the rest of the night A teacher asking you to take some time to think about your behavior

Punishment: (example) Being sent to your room for the rest of your LIFE! No opportunity to learn from your mistake, fix it, and try again

If someone interferes with the learning of others, they will be choosing Notice 1 In this classroom, a “Notice 1” looks like… Students will receive a “Notice1” slip and be made aware of their disrupting behavior.

If a student continues to be disruptive, they are choosing “Notice 2.” In this classroom, “Notice 2” looks like… If required, the student who chooses “Notice 2” will move to a location and be asked to complete the “Notice 2” slip for reflection.

Page. 16

Once a student has chosen “Notice 1” and “Notice 2,” but continues to disrupt, it is time to go to the SRC (the Student Responsibility Classroom) SRC Referrals are for students who are not being very chivalrous; whose behavior is disrupting the learning of others

After choosing an SRC Referral, the student and teacher will: Complete an SRC Referral form The teacher will keep one copy The student will take the other two copies and report directly to the Student Responsibility Classroom in room 101 (this room is located at the bottom of the stairs, around the corner from our new computer lab)

Students will… Check in with Mr. Parson or SRC staff Complete an SRC plan Knights Code of Conduct Behavior Journal Example of the questions are on the next slide Discuss the SRC plan with the SRC staff Call home with SRC staff or an administrator You will be able to return to the class from which you were referred the next day Use the SRC Behavior Journal to discuss with your teacher how you will prevent yourself from interfering with the safety, learning, or well-being of others before the start of that class the next day

In your own words, write a statement (using complete sentences) of the behavior that resulted in an SRC referral. Write a specific plan that will prevent you from repeating the behavior. When and from whom did you learn the rules and expectations/ While in the SRC room who reviewed/retaught CMS rules and expectations?

Reflect on their disruptive behavior—how it interfered with the learning of others Stay in the SRC for the remainder of that class period Review their “Behavior Journal” with the referring teacher in order to be re-admitted to class Follow up with their teacher to collect any homework or assignments missed because of time spent in the SRC

Willful disobedience Harassment Misbehavior during an emergency drill Inappropriate language directed at another (swearing, derogatory and harassing language) Academic dishonesty Skipping a class on-campus (truancy)

Mutual altercation (fight) Skipping a class off campus (truancy) Drug, alcohol, or tobacco possession Anything requiring a report to law enforcement (assault, illegal substances, weapons, theft, etc.) Any other offense that would require a student to be escorted to the office because of serious safety concerns

Students and staff are all trying to continually improve to be their best selves each and every day! We are glad you are here…part of being a “Chivalrous Knight” is learning from your mistakes and continuing to improve.

We are going to have a great year together!
