2 Did You Know? 96% of Gwinnett County students never have a discipline referral. Of the 4% that have a discipline referral, only 1% repeat that behavior. This means we have wonderful students who learn from poor choices and learn to make better choices.

What consequences can be given if a rule is broken, and What each rule means (Examples will be given.)

12 Students Conduct Behavior Code
Gwinnett County Public Schools Students Conduct Behavior Code Gwinnett County’s Student Conduct Behavior Code includes twelve (12) rules. This presentation will help you to understand this Conduct Code.

13 RULE 1–Disruption and Interference with School
Pull fire alarm Disrupt class Refuse to identify yourself Encourage another student to break a rule Be on a school campus without permission Inappropriate dress

14 Class disruption Anything which disrupts the learning environment is a class disruption. If your behavior distracts the teacher or other students and interferes with learning, than a disruption has occurred. Disruptions can also occur in the halls, cafeteria, and other areas of the building. The teacher is the final judge of when a classroom disruption has occurred.

15 Some school problems must be reported to the police.

16 Encourage others to break a rule.
? Suppose you best friend tells you she is going to get a piece of candy from the teachers desk and asks you to watch at the door to see if the teacher is coming. If you do, you could have the same consequences as you friend even if you don’t get any of the candy for yourself. ? ?

17 Pull a fire alarm Some school rules are also state laws. Pulling a fire alarm when there is not a fire would be example of one of those rules. Anytime a law is broken the police must be notified. The assistant principal would call Mr. Haralson, our safety resource officer, to report the incident. Mr. Haralson is a police officer who works for the schools. He would file a report with the juvenile court. You would have school consequences and possibly consequences from the court.

18 RULE 2 – Damage or Destruction of School Property
Damage of school property Steal school property Alter or misuse school computers Students at Alton C. Crews Middle School take great pride in their school. The respect they show for school property is illustrated when you walk in the building. Desks, materials, equipment, and classrooms are always clean and look brand new. Funds for computer equipment can be used to provide new computer because items are carefully used by students to prevent damage. Keep in mind that misuse of the internet – surfing to unauthorized sites- can result in consequences. All students and parents sign a Media/Tech agreement which clearly spells out all appropriate uses of computers and the internet.

19 RULE 3 – Damage or Destruction or Misuse of Private Property
Damage or theft of employee’s private property No personal property may be bought or sold on school grounds At school there are many personal items that belong to other students and to teachers. This would include cars in the parking lot. Walkers are encouraged not to walk through the parking lot. In addition it is against the school rule to buy, sell or trade personal items at school. You may not, for example, sell items such as girl scout cookies or other fund raiser items to trade baseball cards at school or sell a CD to a friend.

20 RULE 4 - Abuse, Threats, Intimidation, Assault or Battery on a School Employee
Symbolic gesture, oral threat, or written threat Rude and disrespectful conduct Insult Profanity Ethnic, racial, sexual, or religious slur Harassment Physical injury or behavior that could cause physical injury It is very important for students to behave in a courteous manner toward other students, teachers, volunteers and visitors to our school. Our goal at Alton C. Crews is to establish a climate where students feel safe and supported. For that reason is it critical to act quickly with consequences when anyone feels threatened, insulted, or harassed by the behavior of other students.

21 The principal or assistant principal may ask you to empty your book bag or may look in your locker if she feels you may have something at school that is dangerous to other students.

22 Students must notify the principal, assistant principal or a teacher if someone has a dangerous or illegal item at school.

23 RULE 5 - Abuse, Threats, Intimidation, Assault or Battery by a Student on Another Student or to any other Person not Employed by the School Symbolic gesture, oral threat, or written threat Disrespectful conduct Insult Profanity directed towards another student Ethnic, racial, sexual, or religious slur Harassment/Bullying Arguing or posturing to fight Physical injury or behavior that could cause physical injury Students need to be aware of the State of Georgia’s Bullying Law, which requires consequences for threatening behavior directed toward another student. The threatening behavior can be words, gestures, moving into another person’s personal space or a combination of actions. A student who is charged with Bullying three times during a school year will be taken to a discipline panel and if found in violation of the rule will be sent to the alternative school. Additionally if a student is involved in a physical confrontation (pushing or fighting ) and another student is injured, the incident could result in a discipline panel even if this was the student’s first administrative referral.

24 RULE 6 Weapons such as a knife, gun, toy gun, or look alike gun
Explosives/fireworks Projectiles Lighters Having a gun on a school campus is against the law. A student who breaks this law will be arrested, taken to a discipline panel, and suspended for one full calendar year. Students need to bring to school only those items needed for class work which include books, paper, pens and pencils, and projects.

25 RULE 6 continued… Students need to be responsible for the materials they bring to school including book bags and pocketbooks. When you go to the airport they as you two questions. Has you bag been in your possession since you packed it and has anyone given you anything to carry for them? When you answer yes that you have had possession of your bag and respond that no one has given you anything to carry, you have accepted responsibility for what is in you bag that you check on the airplane. In the same way you are responsible for what you bring to school and have in your possession at school. This rule carries very serious consequences.

26 RULE 7–Drugs, Alcohol and Tobacco
Alcohol or intoxicant Illegal drugs Prescriptions Over-the-counter stimulants Solicitation of a substance Look-alike substance (Pretending to have the real thing.) Students are not allowed to bring any medicines to school. Parents must bring medications to the clinic and fill out a medical form to file in the clinic. That means again that you are responsible for what you bring to school with you. If you have aspirin orTylenol in your pocketbook or book bag from the weekend, then you must remove it before you come to school. Remember across the counter medicines, including herbs, are not allowed.

27 Pocket pagers for students are against the law at school.

28 RULE 8 – Disregard of Directions or Commands
You must follow reasonable directions. This is possibly the most important rule. It is easy to tell students that they must follow reasonable directions of the teacher. That’s because I know the teacher will not ask you to do anything that will hurt you. If the teacher asks you to climb up on the roof and jump off, I won’t expect you to do it. The teacher might ask you to do something you don’t what to do or don’t understand. For example, the teacher might ask you to change your seat in the class room. You might not want to do this because you are sitting by your best friend. You might not understand why you have to move because you know you have been on task and working hard. I may be that the teacher needs to move you in order to move someone else. The teacher will also need to give instructions that are unusual in the case of an emergency.

29 RULE 9-Indecency Obscene gestures
Sexual harassment (physical or verbal) Inappropriate touching Kissing Pornographic materials Students need to be aware that school is not the appropriate place for hand holding, hugging and kissing. Pictures, drawings or written statements that have a sexual meaning are also inappropriate.

30 RULE 10 – Unexcused Absences
Tardy to class or school Skipping class or school Unexcused absence Encourage another student to violate this rule You must be at school every day unless you are very sick and must see a doctor or you have a family emergency.

31 RULE 11 – Other Conduct Which is Subversive to Good Order
Trespassing Plagiarism Foul language Pagers, laser pointers, electronic devices Loitering Gang, hate-related behavior Others items that are not covered by the previous rules are covered in Rule 11.

32 RULE 12 – Repeated Violations/Misbehavior/Chronic Disciplinary Problem Students
Chronically disrupt Repeatedly violate other school rules Rule 12 applies to students who continue to disrupt school and break school rules even after they have received consequences. Remember that administrative referrals stay on your school record until you graduate.
