Advanced Portfolio Film Promotion Package consisting of a film trailer, front cover of a film magazine and film poster Evaluation Question 3 ‘The Other Side’ Robert Larwood

Audience 0 Throughout the course of our production work, we received helpful feedback from teachers and our target audience, as we attempted to create a professional- standard series of marketing products, especially the trailer for ‘The Other Side’. 0 Within the production of the trailer, we were informed that we required many more shots to make our trailer intriguing and longer, to give an enhanced insight to our audience about the narrative and character development. 0 We were also given more specific details, such as the use of more close-ups, which are often iconic in the social realism genre, as well as the use of better sound effects, which deepened the conventions of the social realism genre, by making the trailer more emotional, and reflective of contemporary society.

Audience 0 Additionally, we were told of the importance to include clear voiceovers that would emphasise the content of the narrative, and help the audience establish further character development. 0 We were also assisted with the special effect used within the main title, which reflected a street light, a regular observation in society, thus itself reflecting the social realism genre, as well as the fact that the issues that the film confronts are not always illuminated to everyone – not everyone notices the hardships that others suffer, like Joe’s homelessness and the divide between rich and poor. 0 For the production of the magazine front cover, I was also informed of the need to alter the brightness and colour of the main images of the characters. Making the contrast between them more evident would create an emphasised sense of the social realism genre, as it is characterised by focusing on the ‘darker’, more complex, difficult issues in society such as homelessness and the divide between rich and poor – this theme is also reinforced by the difference in colour and lighting on this platform.

Audience 0 We were also informed of the necessity to use a brand image, something that would help our audience recognise the film when they saw any form of marketing relating to it, whether it be the trailer, poster or magazine front cover. 0 Consequently, on each platform, we established the brand image to be the use of Brighton, the setting of the film, as well as the relevance of the city to the genre and issues that are brought up, such as homelessness and an economic division. 0 Additionally, the juxtaposition of a wealthy, suited, young man and a homeless man being marginalised by the rest of society creates another part of our brand image. 0 I also used an identical font for the title of the film within each platform, so this would become increasingly familiar to our target audience.

Audience feedback 0 In the exhibition stage of our project, we used a number of methods to market our film to our target audience. 0 Firstly, we used the social network: ‘Facebook’, to obtain reviews of the trailer, by converging technologies (by using our trailer from YouTube on the network) and for the audience to answer relevant questions about our product. This would create a buzz in our target audience on their common social media platform, and begin the spread of word of mouth – the most effective form of advertising. 0 Additionally, we developed a questionnaire to be used amongst our target audience, made up of 10 mostly open questions, so our audience can offer a developed insight into their perceptions of our film, including the genre, the narrative, the character development, the music, and more generally requesting the audience to offer their favourite and least favourite aspects.

Audience feedback 0 The vast majority of our target audience saw that the film was of the social realism genre, illustrating that we had successfully conveyed this, while the narrative appeared to be quite clear too. 0 Many people said that they understood that the film focused on the friendship between a wealthy, young man and a homeless man, while also involving Charles’ changing attitudes towards people and the opportunities he is not appreciating. 0 Many saw that the film’s main theme was also the division between rich and poor, which is what we wanted to achieve. 0 Much of our target audience also seemed impressed with our choice of music and the soundtrack, stating that it effectively “conveyed the social realism genre”, as it is an emotive track.

Conclusion 0 Overall, it appears the majority of our target audience were satisfied with the trailer and the premise of the film in our exhibition stage. 0 The majority felt that we successfully exhibited a social realism genre film, of which the narrative seemed to make sense, yet still leave questions about the disruption and the events within it – which is what we aimed to achieve. 0 The majority felt the music acted harmoniously with the on- screen action, conveying an emotive film, that is based not only on some major issues within society as a whole, but as a portrayal of two characters’ development, and an unlikely relationship that forms between them, despite their vast contrast in standard of living. 0 Most of our audience felt the acting was also successful in conveying a deeply emotive tone to the narrative, and felt that they could be able to relate to them, due to their age, their setting, as well as their own situations.
