As this movie is based upon the genres of action and thrillers, it would be expected that the trailer would be “action-packed” yet filled with suspense. It would also be expected by the audience to see both the title of the film at the end of the trailer along with information on its release. The audience would most likely also be expecting to see the names of the actors/actresses at the end of the trailer as that may help them in the decision of whether they are going to watch that movie or not. Audience Expectations

There are several codes and conventions throughout this trailer that links it to the genres of action and thriller. The codes and conventions used throughout this trailer would include: The use of many consecutive quick cuts which are quite conventional within thrillers. Close ups are used quite commonly on different characters faces. There are quite a few car chases and chase scenes which are both fast paced and supported with quick cuts which are commonly used in action films. We can also take notice 0f the many different gadgets which the main character uses which is another code of action films. Codes and Conventions

This film was rated PG-13 due to the violence included along with the scenes which contain intense amounts of action causing the target audience to be roughly 14-20 year old people, however other people outside this age range may also enjoy this film even though it is not aimed towards them. Due to the large amount of action within this film, generally it would be a younger audience who enjoy this type of genre. Target Audience

Throughout the whole length of this trailer, the majority of it contained large amounts of action and quick cuts to help emphasise how fast paced this action packed film will be, most likely made this way in an attempt to keep the audience at the edge of their seats and to keep them questioning what is the cause of all this. Keeps the audience questioning through the use of voiceovers; “Bourne showed up on our security camera touring Italy, London, tangier” – this leaves the audience questioning themselves why this person is being watched, and what people in a hi tech organisation are doing searching him. Techniques used to engage the audience

Throughout the period of this trailer, the majority of the camera shots were close ups which are initially used to show the emotion of peoples faces or to indicate something important. Such as the close up of a surveillance camera followed by a pan around a city indicating to us that this city is most likely being watched by someone. Focus pull is used at the beginning of the scene showing the main character in full focus with the crowd in the background blurred signifying that this character is important. Tracking shots are used as the main character jumps from the top of a building into a window in a building opposite allowing us to follow the action. Camera shots, angles and movement

Voiceover is used frequently throughout the trailer, most of which leaves us constantly questioning what is going on right from the start with the voiceover exclaiming “Who was I?” then followed by changing pictures of the same character but with different identities. It is then said through a voiceover that he had shown up on security camera which shows the audience that he must be being followed by these people. In scenes where action takes place on screen, in addition with quick cuts to increase the feeling of action, non diegetic asynchronous sound of electronic, strings music playing which adds to the feeling of action within these action clips and is also the theme music of the film. “They need to bring him home in a body bag” is said in voiceover as we see a car falling off a building into the camera shot, followed by the main character sitting on a chair exclaiming “They can’t stop me,” making the main character seem godlike like action heroes should seem. 8 From the beginning to end of the trailer, when the camera is pointed at the people working in the organisation, the camera seems to stay on them for longer periods of time, however, when we see the main character, it is often for only brief periods of time although he does gain the largest amount of screen time as he shows up a lot for short periods of time. In addition to that whenever the camera is turned to the main character, the shots seem to be quicker increasing the speed and tempo which is accompanied by fast paced music in places where action is shown making it seem as though it is going at an even faster pace. Tempo/Speed

The main character has the most screen time during this trailer to show that he is the most important character in this film. Quick cuts used in points of action such as fights or gun shooting to emphasise the action taking place at these moments. Slow motion is used as the main character jumps across from the roof of a building into a window to show exactly how far the distance he jumped was making it seem even more impressive and making the main character seem more heroic and invulnerable. As a car with the main character in falls off the side of the building the camera fades out making it seem as though the main character is gone, but the shot then fades in showing him sitting on a chair adding to him being heroic as he survived something that people ordinarily would not. Editing

The fast paced action scenes including intense fight scenes, high speed car chases and a large range of gadgets and objects used by the main character is exactly what people going to watch an action movie would be looking for, however, this movie is a hybrid of both action and thriller and the thriller conventions used such as the many close ups on characters faces and the large amounts of suspense tied in with the action scenes works very well together. How does it tease and tempt you to watch the film? Does it work?

This trailer has been made very well using the conventions of both action and thriller rather well which would attract the audience interested in these genres to watch the movie. How effective is the trailer?
