Welcome to Open House! Algebra Honors Mrs. Marx

Introduction – Janet Marx Have taught 23 years in the VBCPS system. Product of Virginia Beach Schools. Graduated from Bayside High School. Undergraduate degree from ODU and Masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction from UVA. 7 th grade – is now my favorite grade to teach!

Student Behaviors Be prompt  Be ready to learn when class begins. Be prepared  Have materials with you and know due dates. Be a polite and positive participant  Speak in a normal tone of voice, and listen attentively. Be productive  Turn in work on time, and always do your best. Be a problem solver  Correct problems quickly and peacefully before they escalate.

Algebra Honors High school level class Counts towards HS GPA Attendance very important  Can’t miss more than 6 classes in a semester or need a waiver. Gifted Resouce teacher - Cathy Peterson

Supplies Online textbooks will be issued. Classroom set of textbooks Binder with math section, loose leaf paper, pencils, erasers, spiral or composition notebook, 4 AAA batteries, and graphing calculator.

Routine Enter classroom. Place homework on desk along with punch card. Look on board and start warm-up/brain tickler as teacher checks homework for completion. Go over warm-up and homework answers – students make corrections. (Mini-quiz)

Routine cont. Teach a new concept (if needed) Activities – Use a variety of teaching strategies to break up the time. Incorporate 21 st century skills.  Group work/Partners  Collaboration/Differentiation  Independent work  Games  Dry Erase Board Drills  Video Clips  Critical Thinking/Problem Solving  Walkabouts/Scavenger Hunts  Technology  Flipped Classroom

Homework Assigned every class. Must show ALL work for credit. Late homework will be accepted for credit. It is NOT busy work. Assigned with a purpose! Reinforce skills taught in class. Use online resources if need help. Listserv

Grading Homework 10% All other assessments equal 90%  Classwork weight of 1  Quizzes weight of 2  Tests weight of 4 Standard Based Grading Our Grading Scale % = A 80-89% = B 70-79% = C 64-69% = D Below 64% = E

Exams Everyone takes a MID-TERM exam which counts 1/7 of the semester grade. FINAL exam is optional – exempt if pass EOC. EOC will be May 15.

Need Extra Help? Tutoring as needed in the mornings with Mrs. Marx. Give me a least a one day notice. Must have signed planner. PAMS Time Homework Center in mornings starting at 7:40. Before and after school tutoring starts in October or November by other teachers.
