Math 8 General Curriculum Your student will continue with the development of mathematical fluency, problem-solving skills, mathematical reasoning, and ability to communicate mathematically which he/she began in the 6 th and 7 th grades. The curriculum focuses on the following five strands: Number and Number Sense; Computation and Estimation; Measurement and Geometry; Patterns, Functions and Algebra; and Probability and Statistics. By studying each of these strands, your student will prepare for high school level mathematics. Your student’s online text is a tremendous resource and you will receive separate information about accessing that.

Assignment Weighted Percentages Tests/Projects – 30% Quizzes – 30% Classwork – 30% Homework – 10% I try to grade papers and post grades on a daily basis, expect grades to be entered weekly by Friday as a minimum.

Homework 1. Do it, we will review it! Math takes practice. 2. Because we will review homework daily, late homework will not be accepted for a full grade, but it will be completed for 75% during lunch. 3. Homework assignments will be posted daily on SchoolNet under “Neal” on the Falcons homework page. It is also posted in class – use your planner!

Classwork Completed in class and handed in for a grade. Part of your class work grade is “work skills”, being prepared and on time. In class assignments let you practice a concept and let me know if I need to review or re-explain.

Make-up Work If you know you are going to be absent, I can give you the work you will miss in advance. Just ask! If the absence is unexpected and excused, you will be able to see what you missed on the homework page and go to the missed assignments folder to pick up your work when you return. You will have as many periods to complete the missed work as the periods you missed. Ex. 1 missed period, missing work is due the next class period, 2 days missed, work is due in 2 class periods. It is your responsibility to get, complete and return any missed work to the assignments due folder. Parents will be notified of any missing work.

Basic Classroom Procedures 1. Be on time! Tardies are disruptive and will result in disciplinary action. First tardy: warning, Second tardy: warning, parental notification, Third tardy: Parental notification, teacher detention. 2. Have all your necessary materials – if you are unprepared, you can not complete classwork, etc. If you don’t have materials, try to borrow, if you can’t, I will have some for you to borrow, but it will cost you “brownie” points. Do your math in pencil, not ink! 3. Have your homework on your desk for me to review. Put the number of any problem you had difficulty with on the board when you come in so we can go over it. 4. Complete the “starter” activity on the board during the first 10 minutes of class. 5. Keep an organized math binder. Homework, class work and notes sections. (It will be periodically checked for a grade.) 6. Don’t be shy, ask questions for clarification or help if you don’t understand. 7. Do not be afraid to raise your hand and volunteer answers, if you don’t, you are sure to be called upon anyway.

Courteous, respectful behavior is expected. 1. Follow VBCPS and Larkspur rules. 2. Our classroom should be a “safe” place where everyone is respected. 3. You must have your planner and hall pass if you are to leave the classroom. 4. More specific class rules and procedures will be determined during the first week of class.
