2 nd – 6 th Rockstars April Weekly Reminders 4th Grade Literacy – In Literacy class students will continue to learn comprehension skills and strategies to become better readers. This week students will be completing a unit that includes the comparison and contrast of tall tales and fairy tales. 5th Grade Literacy - In Literacy class students will build upon their prior knowledge of comprehension skills and strategies to become better readers. This week students will be able to describe the characters in a story. Also students will be able to identify each part of a story’s plot (problem, rising action, climax, falling action, & resolution). April 24th, 5:30-7:00pm Students were given a handout at school. 2nd Grade Math - My 2nd graders will be reading, writing, and identifying fractions for halves, thirds, and fourths. They will also be comparing and ordering and adding and subtracting fractions. 3rd Grade Math - My third graders will be reading, writing, and identifying equivalent fractions, writing fractions in the simplest form, comparing, ordering and adding and subtracting like fractions. 2nd Grade Social Studies - My 2nd grade class will be studying about ancient India and the Indus civilization. 3rd Grade Social Studies - My 3rd graders will be studying about Ancient Rome and the Romans civilization. 4th Grade Social Studies - My two 4th grade classes will be studying about modern Kentucky during the 2nd half of the 20th century. 2nd Grade Literacy I can recognize the plot of the story as the action of the story. I can determine the theme of a story. I can develop vocabulary to use when reading, writing, and speaking. 3rd Grade Literacy I can determine cause and effect relationships in a given text. I can determine the meaning of unknown words using a variety of strategies. I can develop vocabulary to use when reading, writing, and speaking. 2nd Grade Science I can describe ways to protect Earth. I can determine the difference between reducing, reusing, and recycling. 3rd Grade Science I can explain why it is important to track the weather. I can explain how a barometer describes weather. I can explain how a hygrometer describes weather and how it works.
Bowen Science classes are learning about the earth's systems. Language Arts classes are learning how to write informative papers such as research papers. **Please pay special attention each week for information regarding activities at the middle school. This info will all come fast and furious these last 8 weeks of school.** Math- This week in 4th grade math, we will continue working with decimals. We will focus on changing fractions to decimals and vice versa. We will also begin learning how to add and subtract decimals up to two place values. Science- In 4th grade science this week we will begin learning about static electricity! We will conduct several experiments to learn about the effects of static electricity and how objects can become electrically charged. Writer's Workshop Classes will begin a unit on poetry, Turning Prose Into Poetry. We will be looking at photographs and writing poetry about them. Also, we will finish our unit with a "Poem In My Pocket" Day at School. Stay tuned. More information to follow. Daily Five We will begin a unit on reading and interpreting Poetry. We will be studying some of America's Greatest Poets. Students are required to find their favorite poem by a famous American Poet. Rock On! Linder 5th grade Social Studies I can identify diverse people of the West. I can discuss the diverse people of the West. I can write about the diverse people of the West. 5th grade Math I can classify triangles by the lengths of their side lengths and angle measures. I can apply the property that the sum of the angle measures of a triangle is 180 degrees. I can apply the properties of parallelogram, rhombus and trapezoid. 6th grade Social Studies I can describe the importance of imperial rule in ancient Chinese society. I can list the ideal qualities of four legendary Chinese emperors. This week in math, we will be learning about area of polygons. We will start the week by working in groups to identify and graph the area of different triangles. We will then venture off to the wild journey of finding area of parallelograms and trapezoids! How exciting! Finding area of all different types of polygons will end this unit and prepare for surface area and volume! Get your minds ready and excited for rocking with area!!
