2 Jumping from 4 th to 5 th Students need to be on time -8:15A.M. Switch for Science & Social Studies Homework increases to about 60 minutes daily. Reading time increases by 5 minutes every month. Midterms & Finals No quarterly benchmarks Fun Day 6, PM Work Sessions, Intramurals & Gym No Handwork, now it’s Art/Music Stewardship (3 times a cycle)

4 Math Things students should know to be prepared for September Multiplication Facts through 10 Long Division Understand large whole numbers Add large while numbers Subtract large whole numbers Multiply large whole numbers Compare fractions to decimals that name tenths & hundredths Describe and identify 2D & 3D figures using formal geometric vocabulary terms Estimation Place value up to millions and millionths Things students will learn in the upcoming year Place value & Estimation Order of Operations Fractions & Decimals- addition, subtraction, multiplication & division Area, Perimeter, Volume & Surface Area and Perimeter of quadrilaterals Geometry –angles, lines, coordinates, base, height and coordinates Algebraic expressions

5 Writing Things students should know to be prepared for September The Writing Process How to write 5 paragraphs How to write personal narratives, character analysis, Biographies, poetry, and informational books Things students will learn in the upcoming year Writer’s Workshop- students will increase writing stamina, skills and independence. Students will do most of their writing within their writing journal. Personal Narratives Persuasive Essays Mystery Writing Report Writing

6 Reading Things students should know to be prepared for September How to write about reading Different reading strategies Analyze and discuss reading Book clubs Things students will learn in the upcoming year Reader’s Workshop-students will participate in whole group mini-lessons, individual conferences, and partner discussions. Students will express their thinking about reading through writing in the Reader’s notebook. Realistic Fiction Non-fiction Mystery Interpretation (analyzing themes) Fantasy Small Group Discussions
