Presentation transcript:

Introduction This PowerPoint is a presentation whose target audience is faculty and administration at a community college. I have tailored this presentation to a hypothetical community college in California.

Assignment Scenario: Your campus is considering a Course Management System. You have been tasked to come to the next [ ] committee meeting and present a proposal for an implementation plan. They would like to see a proposed mission statement, a timeline and the proposed membership of the implementation committee. You can assume most of the committee members are unaware of online education and what it entails so your boss wants you to present an overview of the issues that will need to be addressed. You prepare an introduction to Online Learning

Implementing our new course management system Lindsey J Bertomen

Why online learning? Asynchronous learning, learning without time constraints, is like a chess game... Asynchronous learning, learning without time constraints, is like a chess game...

Imagine... Imagine you share to house with a roommate who works a schedule opposite yours. Both of you enjoy playing chess. online learning is more efficient than asynchronous chess The online environment allows for every participant to have equal and simultaneous access. The online environment allows for every participant to have equal and simultaneous access. It allows users to work at their own pace and still be part of the mainstream It allows users to work at their own pace and still be part of the mainstream

Internet learning is a time machine Equal and simultaneous access insures participation by all students. Equal and simultaneous access insures participation by all students.

Online learning is like a cruise imagine that you are on a vacation cruise. Your ship makes a stop at a port on a beautiful island. There is a boat that of that takes passengers from the ship to the shore. passengers can either take a shopping tour or walk to the natural paradise on the beach.

choices Some passengers opt for a guided inland tour Some passengers opt for a guided inland tour

choices Some tourists choose the nature walk Some tourists choose the nature walk

choices some choose shopping in the nearby village some choose shopping in the nearby village

At the end of the day, all of the passengers board a boat to the cruise ship. They share their experiences over dinner. All of them had different experiences from a common destination. The ship's photographer shows a slide show of the passengers on their various outings. Each photograph sparks a brief conversation among the dinner guests. They have been enriched by what they experienced and what other passengers experienced.

Online Facilitator The ships photographer is like the instructor in an online class. He or she is a facilitator, guiding students from one learning experience to another.

Online instructors should have an expertise in their field, not necessarily an expertise in online learning Technical experience is not required for online education. Most of the interfaces used in online education are intuitive. Technical experience is not required for online education. Most of the interfaces used in online education are intuitive.

Online Learning Supports Constructivist Methodology Constructivism is when the learner connects what they are learning with what they already know Constructivism is when the learner connects what they are learning with what they already know Unlike face to face classroom learning, students can control the flow, frequency and duration of course material Unlike face to face classroom learning, students can control the flow, frequency and duration of course material
