THE TAPE CHALLENGE

QUESTION How do the differences in surfaces affect the adhesiveness of tape?

PURPOSE The purpose of this project is to determine how the differences in surfaces affect the adhesiveness of tape. This is important to know because we need to know which surface it should be on.

HYPOTHESIS We hypothesize that plastic will keep the tape on it the longest. We believe this because it is the smoothest surface of all.

PROCEDURE

MATERIALS 420 CM OF TAPE A SURFACE (WOOD, GLASS, METAL, PLASTIC) A SPRING SCALE 32 WASHERS

VARIABLES Manipulated/independent: surface Responding/dependent: amount of weight held by tape Constant: methed of measuring weight held by adhesive and the size of tape.

STEP-BY-STEP DIRECTIONS 1. Cut one piece of tape 21 cm long 2. Stick the tape to the plastic with the spring scale attach 3. Hook the large plastic container to the hook of the spring scale 4. Add washers to the container one at a time 5. Record amount of weight held 6. Repeat steps 1-5 using wood 7. Repeat steps 1-5 using metal 8. Repeat steps 1-5 using glass 9. Repeat steps 1-7 for more trials

CONCLUSION Our hypothesis was incorrect. The metal held the more weight than the plastic. Metal held and average of 32.4 washers, glass held 25.6 washers , wood held 16.8 washers, and plastic held 14.4 washers. Plastic was the lowest. We realized that the room temperature may have an affect on the tapes sticking ability. We need to find a way to keep the temperature the same.
