How do differences in surface affect the adhesiveness of tape?

PURPOSE

 We hypothesis that the plastic will keep the tape on it longest. We believe because it is the smoothest surface of all.

420 cm of tape Glass surface Plastic surface Wood surface Metal surface Spring scale Metal washers used as weights

 Manipulated/Independent: the surface.  Responding/dependent: amount of weight held by tape.

1. Cut 21cm piece of tape 2. Stick the tape to plastic with spring scale 3. Spring scale attached 4. Hook the large plastic container to the hook of the spring scale 5. Record the washers held 6. Repeat steps 1-5 on metal 7. Repeat steps 1-5 on wood 8. Repeat steps 1-5 on glass 9. Repeat steps 1-8 for four more trails

 Our hypothesis was incorrect. The metal held the most weight instead of plastic. Metal held an average of 32.4 washers, glass held 25.6, wood held 16.8, plastic held 14.4. Plastic was the lowest. We realized that the room temperature may have an effect on the tape’s sticking ability. We need to find a way to control the room temperature for all the trials.
