Saturation Lab Name Date class

Title Temperature and its effect on the saturation point of water

Problem How does the temperature of water affect its saturation point for Borax?

Hypothesis If _________________________, then ___________________________. –Make sure your hypothesis is testable and includes both variables

Definitions Saturation point –The point at which the solvent can hold no more of the solute For this lab, ________ is the solvent For this lab, ________ is the solute Borax-a chemical that can be used as a detergent, often used for washing laundry or dishes –Chemical symbol is Na 2 B 4 O 7 10H 2 O, meaning it is composed of _______________?

Materials Paper and pencil Borax Plastic cups Water 2 mason jars Plastic spoons Pipe cleaner Another pencil you don’t need for class Electric kettle Beaker Masking tape Safety Glasses

Procedure (1 of 3) 1.Get materials 2.Measure out 750 mL of tap water and pour into 1 Mason jar 3.Measure out 750 mL of boiling water and pour into other mason jar 4.Add 1 EVEN spoonful of the Borax to the cold water, stirring until completely dissolved 5.Continue counting and adding spoonfuls until you are no longer able to get the Borax to dissolve

Procedure (2 of 3) 6.Record the number of spoonfuls that went into the cold water 7.Repeat steps 4-6 add Borax to the hot water 8.Cut the pipe cleaner in half 9.Bend 1 end of the pipe cleaner into a shape 10.Wrap the other end of the pipe cleaner around the pencil you can live without until next science period

Procedure (3 of 3) 11.Place both pipe cleaners into the Borax solution 12.Write the names of your group members and HOT or COLD onto 2 pieces of masking tape and stick on the side of the jars 13.Gently place the jars on the countertop 14.Clean up your area

Data Construct a data table to record quantitative data

Observations Record what you saw, smelled, heard, etc. during this lab activity

Conclusion Restate the problem and your hypothesis Accept or reject your hypothesis as correct or incorrect WHY are you making these conclusions? Back it up with data from the lab Discuss factors that affected or could have affected your outcomes
