How can you help? Encourage children to draw, paint etc Show children your writing, shopping lists, things to do, birthday cards. Make scrap books, write postcards, party invitations. Develop fine motor skills by cutting, sewing, dot-to-dots etc. Writing is exciting! Point out writing in the environment.

Covers counting, sorting, matching, patterns, comparing and connections Children work with numbers, shape, space and measures. Children learn through stories, songs, games and imaginative play. Maths

Point out numbers around you, on houses, cars, television channels, cookers and microwaves. Say number names in order as you climb the stairs, count teddies on a bed, plates on the table etc. Compare quantities, who has the most sweets, which shopping bag is heavier?. Let them see you using money; allow buying of items when you are together Talk about numbers; is it a big number / small number / what is the next number? Encourage recognition of numerals. Talk about size and shape of things. What can you do to help?

Look closely at similarities, differences, patterns and change Ask questions about why things happen and how things work. Identify features of living things, objects and events. Use different forms of technology to support their learning.
