3 Communication and Language
Listening and Attention - children will listen attentively in a whole range of situations. They will listen to stories whilst accurately anticipating key events and respond to what they hear with relevant comments, questions or actions. Understanding – Children will follow instructions involving several ideas or actions. They will be able to answer ‘how’ and ‘why’ questions about their experiences and in response to stories or events. Speaking – Children will be able to express themselves effectively, showing awareness of the listener’s needs. They will use past, present and future forms accurately when talking about events that have happened or are about to happen in the future. They will develop their own narratives and explanations by connecting ideas or events. 3

4 Physical Development Prime Area
Moving and Handling - children will develop good control and co-ordination in large and small movements. They will move confidently in a range of ways, safely negotiating space. They handle equipment and tools effectively, including pencils for writing. Health and Self-Care – children will develop an understanding of the importance for good health of physical exercise and a healthy diet, as well as how to keep healthy and safe. They will develop independence with their own basic hygiene and personal needs successfully, including dressing and going to the toilet. 4

5 Personal, Social & Emotional Development
Prime Area Personal, Social & Emotional Development Self-confidence and awareness - Children will confidently try new activities and talk about why they like some more than others. Will become confident to speak in a familiar group, talk about their ideas and choose resources needed for their chosen activities. Managing feelings and behaviour – Children will talk about how they and others’ show their feelings. They will talk about their own and others’ behaviour, its consequences and understand that some behaviour is unacceptable. Making relationships – Children play co-operatively, taking turns. They will take account of one another’s ideas about how to organise their activity. They will demonstrate sensitivity to others’ needs and feelings, forming positive relationships with adults and other children. 5

6 Literacy Specific Areas
Reading – Will help children to learn to read individual words and eventually, simple stories independently. Phonics - Enables children to begin to hear sounds in words and to link these sounds to letters. Writing - Encourages children to develop pencil control and to begin to make marks on paper. 6

7 Mathematics Specific Areas
Numbers – Children will learn to recognise, order and count numbers to 20 and beyond. Develop problem solving skills using addition, subtraction, doubling, halving and sharing. Shape, space and measures – children will have opportunities to explore and use mathematical language to describe 2D and 3D shapes. They will use everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity position, distance, time and money. 7

8 Understanding the World
Specific Areas Understanding the World People and Communities – children will talk about past and present events in their own and family members lives. The World – children will know about similarities and differences in relation to places, objects, materials and living things. They will talk about their own environment as well as making observations of animals and plants and explain why some things occur and talk about changes. Technology – children will recognise that technology is used in places such as home and schools. They are encouraged to select and use technology for particular purposes. 8

9 Expressive arts and design
Specific Areas Expressive arts and design Exploring and using media and materials – children will sing songs, make music and dance and experiment to find ways of changing them. They will safely use and explore materials, tools and techniques, experiment with colour, design, texture, form and function. Being imaginative – children will use what they have learnt about media and materials in original ways. They will represent their own ideas, thoughts and feelings using a range of design and technology, art, music, dance, role-play and stories. 9

10 Child Initiated Learning (CIL)
Fundamental to children’s learning in Reception is learning through play. All areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum are developed through activities provided during CIL. These activities encourage the children to explore and become independent learners. Play helps with maths, writing and reading. Play aids fine and gross motor skills. Play encourages social skills.
