Welcome to the FIRST District 6290 online Membership Seminar.

During the session, your voice will be on mute. With this many attendees, it would be chaotic to have everyone talking at once. There will be a Q & A session at the end, so if you have a question or comment, please raise your hand (the little hand on the banner in the upper right hand corner of your screen) or submit a question through the ‘question’ box, also in the upper right hand corner.

Phone number Access code PIN 46

Periodically during this presentation, we will have polls, asking you for information. Please respond to those right away and then we’ll share the results

RRIMC Jim Ives

And we begin…. District 6290 Membership Seminar

Your role as the Club’s Membership Committee 1.Set and meet the goals of your president and your club 2.Put in place a plan for recruitment 3.Organize and implement orientation and education for new members 4.Put your club into retention mode 5.Use resigning members effectively

Your role as the Club’s Membership Committee Set and meet the goals of your president Put in place a plan for recruitment Organize and implement orientation and education for new members Put your club into retention mode Use resigning members effectively

Goal ? 10% increase How many new members do we need to reach the 10% growth figure? How much attrition?

Strategic Planning Make goal setting a group effort

Your role as the Club’s Membership Committee Set and meet the goals of your president Put in place a plan for recruitment Organize and implement orientation and education for new members Put your club into retention mode Use resigning members effectively

Whose job is recruitment?

How do we get everyone involved? Club assembly Brain storming classifications Collecting names that fit those classifications Assignment of names Follow-up

Key Points Get the entire club involved Use club assemblies to keep it in front of them Plant folks to respond to questions to get the ball rolling. Provide regular follow-up – ‘Membership minutes’ Honor those who bring guests or new members

Your role as the Club’s Membership Committee Set and meet the goals of your president Put in place a plan for recruitment Organize and implement orientation and education for new members Put your club into retention mode Use resigning members effectively

Education Idea that works… When you first get started with a formal new member orientation, do it as the club program, in front of the entire club. This will… Involve current members in the process Refresh many ‘older’ Rotarians on the information Make the new members feel like part of the group

Your role as the Club’s Membership Committee Set and meet the goals of your president Put in place a plan for recruitment Organize and implement orientation and education for new members Put your club into retention mode Use resigning members effectively

The importance of getting a new member started right… I’m pleased to introduce our guest presenter, Dave Scott, membership chair of the Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan Rotary Club.

Example of a method used by many clubs to get new members involved and understanding Rotary… The Red Badge The Red Ribbon The Red Sticker

Examples of things included in the Red Badge program… 1.Attend a board meeting 2.Do a ‘make-up’ at another club 3.Participate in a club social activity 4.Participate in a club project or fundraiser 5.Attend ‘New Member Orientation’ 6.Be a greeter at the door at least once 7.Sell 50/50 tickets at least once

Examples of things included in the Red Badge program… 8.Take attendance at least once 9.Do a “Rotary Minute” at a club meeting 10.Spend at least 1 hour browsing the Rotary Web Site 11.Sign up for “Member Access” on the RI Web Site 12.Give Classification Talk at club meeting

The Role of a Mentor Each Red Badge recipient has a mentor, who will: 1.Sit with the new Rotarian for a while and take them to other tables to meet other Rotarians. 2.Follow along with the Red Badge list to encourage completion of the activities 3.Take new Rotarian to their first ‘make-up’ 4.Take new Rotarian to the board meeting 5.Greet at the door with them to introduce them 6.Call new Rotarian if they miss a meeting

A sample list of what you might have on a red badge list can be found on the district web site... Again

Why do Rotarians leave?

Reasons they leave… How can we overcome these?

Best thing we can do… Get members involved and keep them involved!

Leadership is not always going back to the same people to do the job… Leadership is getting new people involved.

Your role as the Club’s Membership Committee Set and meet the goals of your president Put in place a plan for recruitment Organize and implement orientation and education for new members Put your club into retention mode Use resigning members effectively

They will leave No matter what you do or how hard you try, members will leave. Find out why and use this information to improve what your club is doing.

Membership is Important ! “We’re either Expandable or Expendable” - Robert Schuller

Questions??? Raise your hand to be recognized. We will try to get to everyone between now and 10:57, then we have a final POLL for you.
