CREATING A SPIRITED WORKPLACE: TEAMBUILDING FUN DAMENTALS Susan Kinnebrew, MHA, CCLS Kristin Maier, MS, CCLS Sheri Mosely, MS, CCLS

ICEBREAKER/INTRODUCTIONS Welcome Celebrity faces reveal How can this be incorporated as a team building activity within your department

GOALS/OBJECTIVES Hands-on experience with various teambuilding activities to promote fun and assist with personal stress management Ideas and specific teambuilding techniques that can be utilized with co-workers Resource recommendations for a number of teambuilding activities

PHILOSOPHY OF TEAM BUILDING Team building can sometimes feel like a forced activity that makes people roll their eyes and wish they’d skipped out. However, one thing is certain: humans shine when at play. At very heart of every team lays the one common success factor – People Team building FUNdamentals can unleash newfound skills where teams can discover the magic of serendipity that exists in every-day surroundings and allows for surprise at the creative potential of teammates. Helping to unlock the power of the people!

PHILOSOPHY OF TEAM BUILDING Integrity. Commitment. Honesty. Trust. Passion. These are some values and pillars that lead to high performance; that take ordinary teams into extraordinary places Play: You can be serious about your work without taking yourself so seriously. Play is a mindset more than a specific activity. It allows you to throw yourself with enthusiasm and creativity into whatever you are doing, in a way that is natural, not forced. "Playing” with ideas helps you find solutions to everyday challenges. the power of people connected and collaborating. People make remarkable things happen not spreadsheets

THE FIVE DYSFUNCTIONS There are five dysfunctions of all teams: Patrick Lencioni: The Five Dysfunctions of a Team

BENEFITS OF TEAM BUILDING To improve communication and problem solving To develop team roles To propel a group to a higher level of functioning and unity To expose strengths and weaknesses so you can build the team from there To build better relationships To reinforce that good interaction skills can translate to getting a job done

BENEFITS OF TEAM BUILDING Common Goal Trust/Agreement Generate ideas Increase participation Motivation Rapport building Organizational benefits

STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS Be Prepared and Understand: Our own intentions and philosophy of teambuilding can affect the perception of importance to others Clear objectives will give direction – why are we doing this/what’s to gain Outcomes should be attainable, relevant and something that can be reinforced later Communication is multi-faceted so vary your activities to address different styles Activities should have an intro and a debrief

STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS Things to know and consider: Most activities are really more about the “process” than the “product” Capitalize on group dynamics: *Length of time together *Personalities and learning styles of the group Excitement on your part can set a positive stage – but wrap up or adapt an activity if the group energy fades Lighter activities are a good place to start; go deeper over time Acknowledge the “bomb” – it happens so move on

STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS Logistics are a key component: Have sufficient time, space and supplies needed Have good knowledge of the activity; practice first If the group is large, consider several small groups Provide guidelines and expectations *start on time; end on time *pagers and phones off *stay engaged and respectful Small prizes or rewards are a great motivator Most of all – have fun!

LEADING CHANGE THROUGH TEAM BUILDING Reasons for implementing team building activities: Reorganization/Role Changes (new staff, more staff, reduction in staff, clinical ladder implementation) Cost containment Process changes (the way we deliver services) “Lead Change” and gain “buy-in” from your staff to participate (GE’s change acceleration process): Creating a shared need Shaping a vision Mobilizing Commitment Making Change Last Monitoring Progress

ACTIVITY/WRAP UP Round Robin Take away ideas Q & A
