Presentation transcript:

Unit 3: Called to Healthy Relationships  Learning Goals: I will understand the importance of human relationships on becoming fully human.  I will identify indicators of healthy and unhealthy characteristics of relationships (i.e. awareness of integrity in human relationships vs. abusive and destructive behaviour and effective communication).  I will be able to identify the role of love and relationships in connection with Jesus’ message and ministry in contrast to media interpretations of love, relationships, and sexuality.

Characteristics of Healthy vs. Unhealthy…. In the media First, complete this chart in your notes. Then, share with class. HealthyUnhealthy

Barriers to Healthy Relationships PLEASE COPY 1) Fear  of rejection/judgment: belief that your partner couldn’t possible like and accept you for YOU!  of intimacy: belief that if your partner gets too close (to the real you), it will make you vulnerable to getting hurt 2) Lack of personal identity  Belief that your partner must act, believe, think, behave, and relate like you do. 3) Lack of communication  Where active listening, effective, helpful responding, open free problem solving is absent 4) Need for Approval/ Insecurity  Needing to constantly have approval from your partner. Not wanting to disappoint.

PLEASE COPY 5) Lack of Respect for the Rights of Others  Belief that your rights are the only that count in the relationship 6) Avoidance of Conflict  Belief that if you two never argue, fight, or disagree, the chance of having a lasting relationship is better 7) Lack of Responsibility  Belief that you have little or no responsibility for the relationship or for your partner. You do nothing to nurture the relationship 8) Too much Responsibility  Belief that you are solely responsible for the well-being of both the relationship and your partner

Dignified and Lasting Relationships - Romantic, Friendship, Family, etc Read through handout together 1) Respect We are appreciated and valued for who we really are and who we can become. 2) Commitment Despite our imperfections and faults, people stick by us to help us become better. 3) Care When we need help and support it is unconditional (without strings attached) 4) Understanding People are patient with us and carefully listen to how we feel and how we express our feelings 5) Respectful Challenge When we do wrong, we are told in a way that respects our dignity. 6) Trust By ‘taking a chance’ on us, people have faith when we have yet to prove it.
