Difficult to control, especially when there are large numbers involved. Number of participants can be limited e.g. a telephone conversation.

STRENGTHS OF WRITTEN COMMUNICATION Permanent record available for future reference. Communication is more structured and consistent. Can study written communication at your own convenience.
Appropriate when lots of points need to be covered.
WEAKNESSES TO WRITTEN COMMUNICATION Takes longer to prepare and in some cases to send – letter to America will not arrive for a couple of weeks maybe. Inflexible – does not allow for immediate feedback or interaction. Cannot use non-verbal cues. Inaccessible for some e.g. dyslexics.
