METHODS OF COMMUNICATION

ORAL COMMUNICATION Or verbal communication. Includes: MEETINGS INTEVIEWS PRESENTATIONS TELEPHONE CALLS

STRENGTHS OF ORAL COMMUNICATION Information passed quickly and directly Cheaper than preparing and copying a letter or report Instant feedback

Can use non-verbal cues e. g Can use non-verbal cues e.g. body language, facial expressions, gestures and posture Flexibility – can change the message so people understand Most appropriate method when transmitting delicate information.

WEAKNESSES OF ORAL COMMUNICATION No record is available of what has been said. Distractions or interruptions can interfere with oral communication Strong personalities and emotions may cause a barrier to oral communication e.g. if you don’t like someone you might not listen to them

Difficult to control, especially when there are large numbers involved. Number of participants can be limited e.g. a telephone conversation.

WRITTEN COMMUNICATION This method includes: LETTERS MEMOS REPORTS ADVERTS JOB DESCRIPTIONS

STRENGTHS OF WRITTEN COMMUNICATION Permanent record available for future reference. Communication is more structured and consistent. Can study written communication at your own convenience.

Appropriate when lots of points need to be covered.

WEAKNESSES TO WRITTEN COMMUNICATION Takes longer to prepare and in some cases to send – letter to America will not arrive for a couple of weeks maybe. Inflexible – does not allow for immediate feedback or interaction. Cannot use non-verbal cues. Inaccessible for some e.g. dyslexics.
