FOUR DANCE EPISODE FROM RODEO By Aaron Copland

RODEO: 'HOE-DOWN’  Aaron studied composition in France.  The piece was originally composed for a ballet, which premiered in 1942 and is still danced today, but was later arranged in an orchestral suite.

 There are four sections in this work  Buckaroo Holiday  Corral Nocturne  Saturday Night Waltz  Hoe-Down

THE STORY OF HOE-DOWN  The story is based on tomboyish cow-girl trying to get attention from men at the Saturday Night Dance. She gets invited to dance by a roper and wrangler. She chooses the roper and the music Hoe-Down captures the drama.

 This music is programme music  The form of this song is ABLINKA  This is a modern song

A FEW FACTS ON THE SONG The song is allegro (fast) There are 193 bars in the whole piece The song is in 2-4 time but it changes to 3-4 The song is in the bass clef and treble clef

INSTRUMENTS  There are many different instruments in this tune.  The piccolo, flute, oboe, cor anglais, clarinet, bass clarinets, horns, trumpets, trombones, bass trombone, timpani, xylophone, snare drum, woodblock, bass drum, cymbals, cello’s, violins, viola’s, basses, bassoon, horns and piano.

The piece is sometimes played in tutti (full orchestra) In the form ABLINKA Section A is played by stings,woodwind, trumpets and xylophone

 In the form ABLINKA  B is played by trumpets, snare drums  The link is played by piano, strings, bassoon and woodblock  Section A is played by strings, woodwind, trumpets and xylophone

 The movement in the song is very quick  It is mostly in D major  The woodblock imitates the sound of a horse galloping.
