What is menstruation? Menstruation is the shedding of tissues and blood from the lining of the womb through a woman’s vagina. It is a monthly vaginal bleeding that women experience. It is made up of clean blood and tissues. It is natural. When it starts for the first time – it is called menarche.

How long does monthly bleeding last? It differs from woman to woman but normally it may be as short as two days and as long as a week (7 days). It depends on the health and diet of a woman.

What does it indicate? Menstruation indicates that a girl has become sexually mature. It means that she is ready to reproduce and if she has unprotected/unsafe sex, she will get pregnant and give birth. It means her body is ready to reproduce.

Back pain Heavy Bleeding Passing Clots Abdominal Pain Uncomfortable feeling Muscle cramps Mood swings Drowsiness/laziness It is natural to have the following during menstruation:

Suggestions for managing pain and cramps during menstruation: Use hot water bags. If the cramps are severe, the girl should consult the physician.. Adequate rest is necessary, especially for the first three days of heavy bleeding. Regular exercise helps reducing cramps and pains. Drink hot water/ tea/soup etc.

Important points to note during menstruation: Keep the genital area clean all the time, especially during menstruation otherwise it will lead to itching, infections, burning sensation and bad odor. Change sanitary napkins/clothes at least 3 to 4 times a day. If you are using a cloth, it should be washed properly with soap and well dried in the sun. To prevent inflaming due to rubbing, use powders and lotions to keep your skin safe.
