15. Medical Checkups
Pap smear, a sample of cells is taken from the cervix and examined under a microscope.
Mammogram is an X-ray of the breast that can help detect breast cancer.
Ovarian cysts Ovarian cysts are growths on the ovary.
Endometriosis A condition in which tissue from the lining of the uterus—the endometrium—grows outside the uterus, in the pelvic cavity.
Infertility Causes of infertility in women include blocked fallopian tubes and problems with ovulation.

16. Prompt Treatment for Infections
Vaginitis: a vaginal infection caused by yeast, bacteria, or other microorganisms.
Symptoms include:
a thick discharge
Odors
vaginal itching
a burning sensation during urination

17. Medical Treatment
Symptoms of vaginitis, sores on the genitals, or any unusual pain in the abdomen require a medical exam.
A woman should consult a doctor
if she notices heavier bleeding than normal during menstruation
if her periods stop completely
if she notices bleeding at times between her regular periods
For the early detection of breast cancer, all women, including teens, should perform a monthly breast self-examination.

18. Breast Self Exam
If signs of breast cancer are found early, the disease can be treated and often cured.
The best time to do a breast self-exam is the week after a menstrual period, when the breasts are least swollen.

19. Breast Self Exam Check your breasts while lying down.
Lie down and place your right arm behind your head.
Use the finger pads of the three middle fingers on your left hand to feel for lumps in the right breast.
Use overlapping dime-sized circular motions of the finger pads.

20. Breast Self Exam Check your breasts while lying down.
Use three different levels of pressure.
Use light pressure to feel the tissue closest to the skin.
Use medium pressure to feel a little deeper.
Use firm pressure to feel the tissue closest to the chest and ribs.

21. Breast Self Exam Check your breasts while lying down.
Feel the breast in an up-and-down pattern starting at an imaginary line drawn straight down your side from the underarm, and move inwards until you reach the bone in the middle of your chest, your sternum

22. Breast Self Exam Check your breasts while lying down.
Check the entire breast area, moving down until you can feel only ribs and up to the neck or collar bone.
Continue lying down and place your left arm above your head.
Repeat the exam on your left breast, using the finger pads of the right hand.

23. Breast Self Exam
Look at your breasts while standing in front of the mirror.
While pressing your hands down firmly on your hips, look for any change in breast shape or appearance, such as dimpling of skin, redness or swelling, or changes to the nipples.
Slightly raise your right arm and feel your underarm with your left hand fingers. Repeat on the left side.

24. Breast Self Exam
Report any abnormalities to your doctor immediately.
Many lumps are cysts or harmless tumors that are not cancerous.
But only a doctor can make a diagnosis.
