2 Objectives  Students will be able to explain the purpose of the female reproductive system after reading about, viewing a power point presentation, taking a post test.  Students will be able to draw, label some parts of the female reproductive system and color the female reproductive system.  Students will be given a short quiz on the female reproductive system.

3 Big Idea  The organs of the female reproductive system enable pregnancy to occur with the first monthly ovulation.

8 Female Reproductive Organs  Egg female gametes or ova (singular—ovum)  Fallopian Tubes a pair of tubes with fingerlike projections that draw in the ovum.  Ovaries the female sex glands that store the ova and produce female sex hormone.  Uterus the hallow, muscular, pear-shaped organ that nourishes and protects a fertilized ovum until birth.  Vagina a muscular, elastic passageway that extends from the uterus to the outside of the body.  Cervix The opening to the uterus, and into the vagina.

9 Menstruation  Means: The shedding of the uterine lining. Sanitary pads or tampons to absorb the blood flow.  Begin first menstrual cycle between the ages of 10 and 15.  Maybe irregular.  Endocrine hormones control the cycle.  Continues until from puberty until menopause which usually occurs between the ages of 45-55.

10 Maintaining Reproductive Health  Big Idea  Good hygiene, breast self-exams, and abstinence from sexual activity help female reproductive system.  Bathe regularly  Have regular medical exams  Practice abstinence  Perform breast self-exams once a month right after menstrual period.

12 Female Reproductive System Problems  Menstrual cramps Usually occur at beginning of cycle  Treatment of cramps 1. Light exercise 2. Heating pad 3. If severe, seek professional health care, purchase over-the-counter medication 4. Prescription medication

13 Female Reproductive System Problems (continued)  Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) A disorder caused by hormonal changes.  Symptoms  Anxiety  Irritability  Bloating  Weight gain  Depression  Mood swigs  Fatigue  Regular activity  Good nutrition may reduce severity of symptoms

14 Toxic Shock Syndrome  Rare but serious bacterial infection  Affects the immune system  Affects the liver  Can be fatal  To reduce risk of TSS:  Use tampons w/lowest absorbency  Change often

15 Toxic Shock Syndrome (continued)  Symptoms:  Dizziness  Fever  Diarrhea  rash  red eyes  muscle aches  See doctor

16 Infertility and Other Disorders  Has several causes:  Endometriosis:  Occurs when uterine tissues grows in the  Ovaries  Fallopian tubes or the lining of the pelvic cavity

17 Sexually Transmitted Diseases  Spread through sexual contact  Untreated STDs/STIs such as:  Gonorrhea and Chlamydia are associated w/  pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)  May cause infertility  Abstinence from sexually activity until marriage is the only way to avoid STDs/STIs

18 Vaginitis  2 common forms of vaginitis  Yeast infection (Candida)  Bacterial vaginosis  Results in:  Discharge  Odor  Pain  Itching  Burning

19 Ovarian Cysts  Fluid filled sacs on the ovaries  Small noncancerous cysts may disappear on their own  Larger cysts may have to be removed surgically.

20 Cervical, uterine and ovarian cancers.  Increase risk/w  Early sexual activity  STDs such as  Human Papillomavirus (HPV)  Human Papillomavirus (pap-ah-LO-mah-VYE- rus) (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted virus in the United States.  At least 50% of sexually active people will have genital HPV at some time in their lives.  Early detection through regular checks
