THE PROCESS OF SATISFYING HUNGER 1. You need energy 2. You feel hungry 3. You eat to get rid of hunger 4. You feel satisfied 5. You need more energy 6. The cycle repeats again

WHAT FOOD DOES FOR YOU  It provides energy for daily activity  Eating is an enjoyable activity

CARBOHYDRATES Carbohydrates are the primary source of energy. Readily available for daily activities  4 calories Sources of Carbohydrates:  Whole wheat breads  Rice  Pasta  Potatoes

PROTEIN Protein is essential for body growth and repair of body cells. Especially important for athletes because they work muscles and need protein for recovery  4 calories Sources of Protein:  Meats  Eggs  Fish  Nuts  Beans

FATS Fats are another source of energy. It also protects against temperature changes. Important but eating to much fat = overweight  9 calories Sources of Fat:  Butter  Cheese  Eggs  Meat

VITAMINS Vitamins help regulate body functions. You need vitamins to help immune system fight infection. Sources of Vitamins:  Fruits  Vegetables  Whole grain breads

MINERALS Minerals help your body work properly. Sources of Minerals:  Milk  Meats  Whole grain cereal

WATER Water is essential to our body because it carries nutrients. It helps many body functions including removing waste. Sources of Water:  Juices  Milk  Oranges  Watermelon

HOW MUCH SHOULD YOU EAT? It depends on three factors:  Gender  Naturally men eat more than women  Activity level  Those more physically active must consume more calories than less active  Age  Important for young people to eat nutritious because their bodies are growing.

CONSEQUENCES OF A HEALTHY DIET  Increased Energy (Breakfast)  Maintain a healthy weight  Control body composition (weight)  How can a healthy diet positively affect other components???
