Ch 16 War & Revolution Sec 1 The Road to World War I

World War I (The Great War) The four Main long term causes of WWI Militarism Alliances Imperialism Nationalism

Militarism The six Great powers (G. B., France, Italy, Germany, Russia, and A.H.) all had huge armies. All have mandatory conscription- a military draft or all males must serve a set term of service. Great Britain Had a Navy twice as large as all the others combined.

Alliances Old feelings still bad between Germany and France from Franco-Prussian war. Germany thinking France is plotting against it, starts an alliance against France. Triple Alliance Germany Austria-Hungary Italy

France alarmed by this, Starts its own alliance Triple Entente France Russia Great Britain

Imperialism Competition between The Great powers of Europe led to fierce race for colonies. **(You all should know the definition to this, if not you fail 9 th grade)**

Nationalism The Balkans (Southern Europe) has just freed itself from the Grasp of the Ottoman Empire. Each wants its own independence. Stronger European Nations look to expand their territories. Into this area. Austria-Hungary annexes Bosnia and Herzegovina

Nationalism ctd… This outrages Serbia who owned this area and was also made up of Slavic peoples. Russia also upset, but does nothing.

Spark that starts the war The arch duke Francis Ferdinand (heir to the throne of Austria) visits Bosnian city of Sarajevo with his wife Sophia. He is assassinated by Gavrilo Princip, a terrorist from the Black Hand (group that wants to rid itself of Austrian rule) Ferdinand and his wife are killed

Gavrilo Princip

Austria then attacks Serbia This attack sets off chain reaction. Russia attacks A-H, then Germany comes to A-H’s aid. Other nations follow and Jump in. Starts first World War (bus stop mentality)

Western Front

Germany’s plan German is trying to avoid fighting a war on two fronts. Comes up with Schlieffen Plan ( France first, then Russia) Knock out France in first 6wks, then hit Russia (take Russia some time to mobilize)

Von Schlieffen
