Training & Development Training means giving new or current employees the skills they need to perform their jobs.

5 Steps of Training & Development Process 1. Needs Assessment : Undertakes three types of analyses : a. Organizational: examining firm’s mission, goals, resources.. b. Personal : who needs training and their readiness c. Task: identification of the tasks, knowledge, skills.. Methods used to conduct Needs Assessment are : Interviews, Surveys Review of records Audit reports Discussions with management Subject matter experts

5 Steps of Training & Development Process 2. Instructional Design : Here the instructor decides on, compile and produce the training program contents, including exercises, workbooks and activities. 3. Selection of Appropriate Training Methods : Here the trainer has to choose from a variety of training methods available

5 Steps of Training & Development Process 4. Implementation : This involves training the targeted employee group. 5. Evaluation : This entails assessing the training program’s success or failure

Training Methods On-the-Job Training : This means having a person learn a job by actually doing it. Types: Coaching Job rotation Job Instruction Training (JIT) : Different from Coaching, as the trainers first train the supervisors, who in turn train the employees.

Training Methods Contd.. Advantages (On-the-job Training) : Inexpensive Facilitates learning Disadvantages: If not handled properly can result in high cost due to damaged machinery, unsatisfied customers or misfiled forms.

Training Methods Contd.. Off-the-Job Training : Types: Classroom lectures / Seminars / Workshops Virtual Reality : Is a computer based technology that enables users to learn in a three-dimensional environment. Interaction b/w the trainer and a trainee is in a real time simulated situation, with its components by viewing a virtual mode on a computer screen or through a head-mounted display.
