MJ2 Ch – Circle Graphs

Bellwork Please take out your homework from yesterday and leave it on your desk for me to check 1. Draw a circle. Divide the circle into 2 parts. Write the percent that each part represents of the whole 2. Draw another circle. Divide the circle into 4 parts. Write the percent that each part represents of the whole 3. Draw another circle. Divide the circle into 8 parts. Write the percent that each part represents of the whole

Assignment Review Ch 2 Resource book lesson 2.6 Study Guide & Intervention – pg. 92 # 1 – 6

Before we begin… Please take out your notebook and get ready to work… Today we will look at circle graphs, another tool useful in organizing and interpreting data… It is expected that you already know how to construct a circle graph…This should be a quick review…

Objective Students will construct and interpret circle graphs

Comments First and foremost one of the biggest issues that I have come across with circle graphs is that students pie pieces don’t represent accurate percentages… The reason that I had you draw the circles and write the percentages for bellwork is so that you have a visual representation of 50%, 25% and 12.5% While I do not require you to be 100% accurate with your pie pieces, your representation had better be in the ball park to receive credit Lets look at some examples…

Examples AcceptableNot Acceptable 30% 25%

Examples AcceptableNot Acceptable 48% 50%

Constructing Pie Charts A pie chart never displays raw data! Each piece of the pie represents a percent of the whole If you are given data as percentages you can create the pie chart from the percentages If you are given data as numbers you must convert the numbers into percents BEFORE you construct the pie chart. Let’s look at some examples…

Example – Data as Percent Data: Student Favorite Sports 1. Make sure the percents add up to 100% 2. Construct pie chart – demonstrate on board SportPercent Football30% Basketball25% Baseball22% Tennis8% Other15%

Example – Data as Numbers Data: Types of movies in a DVD collection 1. Convert each number to percent (demonstrate on board) 2. Create pie chart (demonstrate on board) Type of Movie Number Action24 Comedy15 Science Fiction 7

Interpreting the data Circle graphs provide you with a visual representation of the whole data set and how much each category represents of the whole.

Components of a Circle Graph All graphs must have a title describing what the data represents In a circle graph each pie piece is labeled with the category and percent Circle graphs are usually colorful

Activity Today you will work with a partner on an activity. I will give you 3 minutes to get with a partner It is expected that you are on task and working during the activity If you cannot control yourself you will be sent to a time out with an alternative assignment (text p. 420 – 421 # 1 – 22) Please conduct yourself appropriately

Activity You and your partner will create a 1 question survey. You may choose from the following categories:  What is your favorite color  What is your favorite type of music  What is your favorite type of movie For ease of data collection, make your survey multiple choice with 5 choices You will then survey your classmates After you have gathered your data you and your partner will then construct a pie chart based upon the data

Activity You must survey at least 15 classmates I will provide you with paper to construct your pie chart On one side of the paper you will have your pie chart (label it and make it colorful) On the other side you will have your survey question and responses…(see example) Make sure that you have a heading on your paper…with both partners names, today’s date/period, and pie chart this assignment is due today

Example Survey Question: What is your favorite color? 1. Blue 2. Black 3. Brown 4. Orange 5. Green NameFavorite Color JohnBlue SueBlack JoseBlue JeffGreen Total of 15 responses to survey

After the activity Raise your hand if you liked this activity…Why? Raise your hand if you did not like this activity…Why? My comments…

Summary In words describe what you learned today…

Assignment Text p. 420 # 5 & 6; p. 421 # Reminder:  I do not accept late assignments  I am expecting a quality product  If the data is in numbers you must convert it to percentages before you can create your pie chart!  Use your notes if you get stuck
