ORGANIZING AND SUMMARIZING DATA Chapter 2

2.1 Organizing Qualitative Data Using Excel Obj: organize data into charts by hand and using excel Raw data Frequency Relative Frequency Frequency Distribution – lists each category and the number of occurrences for each Relative Frequency Distribution – lists each category with the relative frequency for each

Example Given the following data, create a frequency distribution and a relative frequency distribution. cancercar accidentheart failure gunshotfallgunshot gunshotcar accidentgunshot assaultcar accidentgunshot gunshotcar accidentgunshot fallcar accidentcar accident gunshotcar accident

Displays Think of some other ways to display the data to make it easy to read.

Displaying Qualitative Data Bar Graph – uses rectangles to represent each category, can represent frequency or relative frequency Pareto Chart – is a bar graph whose bars are in decreasing order Side by Side Bar Graph – is used to compare two data sets Pie Chart – each sector of the circle represents a category and is proportional to the frequency of the data

Bar Graph

Pie Chart

Using Excel List the categories in column A and frequency in column B. Select the chart wizard icon and choose the appropriate chart type. Click inside the data range cell. Highlight the data to be graphed. Click next. Click “Titles” Click “Data Labels” Select “Show label and percent” Click “Finish”

Practice DuPont Automotive is a major supplier of paint to the automotive industry. It conducted a survey of 100 randomly selected autos in the luxury car segment that were recently purchased and obtained the following colors. Silver – 32White – 30Blue – 9 Black – 9Gray – 7Red – 6 Gold – 3Green – 2Brown – 2 Construct relative frequency distribution. Construct a relative frequency bar graph. Construct a pie chart.
