The Spread of Protestantism SWBAT: explain the spread of Protestantism across Europe and the effect it had on those living at the time. Homework: Study for vocab quiz on Thursday. Do now: Do you think the Pope who denied Henry VIII his divorce regretted his actions? Why or why not?

Reading Quiz

Peace of Augsburg Lutheranism spread rapidly throughout Germany. Catholic Holy Roman Emperor Charles V sent his armies into provinces where Princes allowed Protestantism and war broke out. In 1555, Charles finally reached a compromise with the princes. The Peace of Augsburg stated that each German ruler had the right to choose the religion for his state. His subjects had to either accept the ruler's decision or move away. Almost all the princes of the northern German states chose Luther's faith in opposition to Rome. Why do you think so many princes chose Lutheranism?

Anglican Church Began as a political move, rather than religious. In 1529, England’s King Henry VIII wanted a divorce from his wife, Catherine of Aragon. Why? Catherine had not produced a son to inherit the throne. Only had produced a daughter, Mary. Was in love with another women, Anne Boleyn.

What’s the Problem? Catholic Church does not usually permit divorces. The pope is allowed to make exceptions, however, Pope Clement VII denies Henry the divorce.

So what does Henry Do? Henry withdrawals from the Catholic church and begins his own church. He creates the Church of England with the King as its leader. Very similar to the Catholic Church in both organization and worship practices. The church grants Henry the divorce he desires and goes on to marry Anne Boleyn.

Calvinism

Beginnings A man named Huldrych Zwingli, a catholic priest, was upset with the church for reasons similar to Luther’s. Zwingli meets with Luther and discovers they believe similar things EXCEPT: How to worship Use of religious imagery Zwingli dies in a battle between Protestants and Catholics and his work is carried on by a man named John Calvin.

John Calvin Created a Protestant Church that had a strong following. Had a strong belief in predestination: at the beginning of time, God had already decided who would be saved. Calvinists lived very strict lifestyles: No card playing No dancing No profane language No showy dress For these reasons, Calvinism was extremely appealing to people.

Calvinism Spreads Spread to France where Calvinists called themselves Huguenots. French monarchy considered this a threat to national unity. Led to a series of confrontations between French Catholics and Protestants. Most famous is the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre instigated by Catherine de Medici.
