2. When, Who and What When: It began in 1517 Who: It was launched by Martin Luther What: The Protestant Reformation was a religious movement –A protestant is one who protests (against the Catholic Church). –A reformation is to reform the church

Why Why do they call it the Reformation? –To reform means “to improve.” –Reformers (like Erasmus) wanted to improve the Catholic Church. –Revolutionaries (like Martin Luther) had to leave the Catholic Church. –They had no choice: The Catholic Church labeled them heretics and burned them at the stake.

4. How Martin Luther broke away from the Catholic Church and formed his own Protestant church. Results: Within 50 years, HALF of Europe became Protestant!

5. Where It began in Europe and spread to the New World. Northern Europe= Protestant –North America= Protestant Southern Europe=Catholic (close to Rome) –South America=Catholic
