Tybalt Capulet Prince of Cats.

Importance of Tybalt in the film: Tybalt ‘Prince of Cats’ (Juliets Cousin) he is the leader of the younger generation of the Capulets. He shows that the hatred bwtween the two familes (Montagues and Capulets) is still progressivley strong even though it has gone on for many generations.

10 Camera Shots

This extreme close up of Tybalt’s face when he is in the gas station waiting to fight the Montague’s is to show the sly expression on his face. You can clearly see in his eyes that he has an evil plan and is not scared. The director chose this shot because you can see every detail of Tybalt’s face and this is important, as this is his first appearance in the movie. You can see his stubble skin and his dark features clearly representing his roughness. The cigarette is there to show that he is ruthless although everyone probably smoked back in those days.

This mid shot is at the gas station again in the first scene when he is just about to shoot the Montague kid. It shows Tybalt’s arrogance as he kisses his gun because he knows that he will get the shot. He has also quite obviously no hesitation in shooting someone else so had grown up in a violent environment with not many rules around guns or murder.

On the beach when Tybalt is looking for Romeo so he can fight him is when this mid-shot is taken. He clearly has his ‘boys’ backing him as we can see that because they are walking slightly behind him rather than next to him indicating power. He has his arms out form his sides slightly making him look a little bigger than he is to look tougher for his opponent that he is fighting,

At the party when Tybalt see’s Romeo and a Capulet party he gets angry and he can see this in his facial expressions in the mid shot which progressively becomes into a close up in the movie. His sly smile gets clearer as the shot gets closer. It shows how disgusted and shocked he is to see a Montague at his party.

This mid-shot of Tybalt and Lord Capulet shows the power difference in the relationship. Because Lord Capulet is higher than him and Tybalt is looking up at him, it shows that Lord Capulet has the power of the decision to fight Romeo or not and Tybalt is asking for permission. The shot is slightly a low shot, subtly making Lord Capulet to have even more power.

After the party when Romeo and leaving Tybalt follows him out After the party when Romeo and leaving Tybalt follows him out. He is staring at Romeo and planning his revenge on him. The mid shot shows his staunch stance which is aggressive. His facial expressions are in a harsh frown which is clear to see in a mid shot more than it would be if this shot would be if it was a full shot.

At the beach when Tybalt comes to find Romeo for a fight he gets Mercutio instead. Mercutio isn’t bothered by him until he makes a joke about him being gay. This extreme close up shows the delight Tybalt got in getting a reaction from Mercutio. He is laughing at the way Mercutio is angry and how he is reacting to such a small statement. This shows that Tybalt likes a battle and gets enjoyment out of pushing peoples buttons.

After Tybalt finds Romeo he asks him to fight After Tybalt finds Romeo he asks him to fight. This mid-shot shows his openness and willingness to a fight against an enemy. He does not look frightened but confused when Romeo denies.

After Mercutio is stabbed and he runs out onto the beach to die Tybalt feels bad as if he has taken the fight too far. This close up shot with a low angle is so we can see a different more sensitive side of Tybalt that we had not seen in the movie before. His face is really relaxed and he looks sad instead of dirty.

This full shot is Tybalt standing over Romeo before he starts to kick him. The director has used a full shot to show the sunset in the back round and also to have the theatre, where the play was originally done, to bring back the history of the play. Even though you can only see the silhouettes, you can still tell the Tybalt is the one towering over Romeo because of his typical strong stance.

“Quotes” “What, art thou drawn amoung heartless hinds? Turn thee Benvolio and look untill thy death.” “Peace? Peace, I hate the word, as I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee.” “Romeo thou art a villian” “Romeo the love I bear thee can afford no better them than this, thou art a villian” “What would you have with me?”

Costumes:

The red top with his God on it shows the importance of religion to Tybalt and therefore most likely the Capulets. Is is tight to show how fit he is and that he thinks a lot of himself.

The devil costume is to show that Tybalt is not a pleasant character and that he is devil-like. It shows his nasty personality similar to a devil.
