1 Romeo and Juliet ~ The dramatic moments in Act 3 Scene 1 & how do they affect Romeo

2 oToTybalt slaps Romeo’s hand away. “Boy, this shall not excuse the injuries That thou hast done me. Therefore Turn and draw”- Tybalt Affects Romeo... Must walk away. (defy stereotype) o Mercutio takes over the fight “O calm, dishonourable, vile submission!” “Tybalt, you ratcatcher, will you walk”- Mercutio. Affects Romeo.... Called dishonourable, puts Mercutio in danger.

3 o Co Comradeship In the 1986 film, both Capulets and Montagues join up and cheer. Affects the whole atmosphere....... Shows a fragile bond beginning to form. COMARADESHIP! Tension!

4 oMoMercutio “blames” Romeo for intervening. “I am hurt” “A plague a' both houses” “Ask for me tomorrow and you shall find me a grave man” “Why the devil came you between us? I was hurt under your arm. Affects Romeo.... Thinks he was right.

5 oMoMercutio's actual death. “ O Romeo, Romeo, brave Mercutio is Dead!”- Benvolio o Romeo decides what to do about Tybalt Affects Romeo.... Heart torn “Thy beauty hath made me effeminate” “This day’s black fate on more days doth depend, This but begins the woe others must end”- Romeo

6 o Benvolio trying to stop Romeo Shows a change in Romeo’s character Contextual Influences:- Stops denying the stereotype that men should fight.

7 More Dramatic moments oRoRomeo and Tybalt fighting. o Tybalt’s death. he Prince banishing Romeo. Other ybalt's expression, after killing Mercutio oRoRomeo’s expression after killing Tybalt. “Mercuito’s soul is near above our heads, you, me or both shall be joining him”- Romeo “O, I am fortunes fool

8 Just after oBoBanishing is worst than dying.- Romeo. “ Ha banishment? Be merciful, say ‘death’. For Exile hath more terror in his look, Much more than death. Do not say ‘banishment’.” Affects Romeo as his languages shows that he would rather die than be banished.

9 Shakespeare’s Intention Shakespeare’s intention for killing Mercutio.... stealing the play. Or Wanted to show how intense the feud is.

10 Shakespeare’s Intention Shakespeare’s intention for Romeo killing Tybalt could have been.... He only meant Romeo to fight him not to kill him, but due to the circumstances.....

11 Contextual Influences & Themes Fighting; Men were expected to fights this is supported by “O calm, dishonourable, vile submission” but Romeo defies the stereotype as he will not fight. Makes him effeminate.

12 Contextual Influences & themes Revenge; Revenge was very important in the Shakespearian times so in Act 3 Scene 1. ESSENTAIL that Romeo takes his revenge. “Mercuito’s soul is but a little way above our heads, Staying for thine to keep him company. Either thou or I, or both must go with him”

13 Themes Revenge- Tybalt wants revenge on Romeo  For the party Romeo wants revenge on Tybalt  killing Mercutio. Pretend  Juliet wants revenge on Romeo for killing Tybalt, (she really wants to go and see him)

14 Fate “O, I am fortunes fool!”- Romeo –Knows he is up against fate, links to the beginning “A pair of star crossed lovers take their lives” Shows that the audience already knows what is going to happen and we know that his story will end tragically.

15 Conflict & Loyalty Conflict is everywhere in the play at the beginning...... In the middle...... At the end...... Loyalty from Mercutio Loyalty from Juliet and Romeo at the end.
