Ch. 11, Section 1  Industrial Revolution

Industrial Revolution:  Factory machines began replacing hand tools; large scale manufacturing  replaced farming.

What caused it? War of 1812 – naval blockade of the U.S. forced manufacturin g to grow in the U.S.

Industrial Revolution  What effects do you think it will have on the U.S.?

 Fast-moving rivers (factories water powered) Transportation – New England has many ocean ports Willing labor force Free enterprise ( investing in US industries) What caused New England to get the factories?

Slater's Mill Child & family labor paid low wages Brought plan from Great Britain Unskilled laborers from farms Rhode Island

Lowell's Mills Young women paid high wages to begin with but dropped English looms Unskilled farm girls Massachusetts

How did these mills change the textile industry in the U.S.?  The inventions of the spinning jenny and the power loom made it possible for unskilled workers to produce cloth more quickly. Also, workers and machines were brought together under one roof allowing for the  growth of cities.
