Mathematics Year 1 will continue to recognise odd and even numbers, they will start learning the 2, 5 and 10 times tables by counting in groups/set of numbers. The class will tell the time to the half hour and quarter hour on analogue clocks and begin to read these times on digital clocks. They will also revise the months of the year. Children will read, interpret and create a pictogram; begin to recognise and read block graphs; measure lengths using non-standard, uniform units; recognise and name simple 2D shapes and continue repeating patterns. English Year 1 will be doing lots of writing along side every topic lesson. They will be writing poems about WW1 and will write about key events from the past. The class will be describing the differences between Burnham and Australia, they will do some non-fiction writing to advertise Australia in a travel agents. Children will write their own stories, set in Australia, about animals that are native to Australia. Once the class have made their swings in Design Technology they will have to write evaluations about their product.

Science Year 1 will be listening to many different sounds and describe how the sounds are generated. Children will explore the way they hear sounds through their ears and describe what they observe when they move further away from a source of sound. The class will make observations and measurements relating to sounds and will present their findings in charts.

History Year 1 will be looking at key events in the past. To commemorate 100 years since the beginning of WW1, Year 1 will be making white poppies to symbolise peace. The children will look at other keys events from the past to understand chronology.

Geography Year 1 will be investigating the world’s continents and oceans. The children will also be comparing and contrasting the geography of Burnham with that of the geography of Australia.

Design and Technology Year 1 will design and make their own swings for a small teddy to sit in. They will look at existing seaside swings and think about how swings are made, how they move and how they could make a their own functional swing. Art and Design The class will be exploring weaving techniques, using different textured fabrics and wool to create a piece of artwork.

R.E. The class will look at the special artefacts of many different religions. Including Muslim, Sikhism and Buddhism. Children will also look at the wonderful world that God created and look at the creation story. P.E. Year 1 will be using more apparatus in gymnastics this half-term. They will continue to develop their balance, agility and coordination. The class will participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending. They will engage in competitive (both against self and others) and cooperative physical activities in a range of increasingly challenging situations. Computing Year one will use their programming skills to programme ‘Beebots’ by giving the device precise and unambiguous instructions to navigate obstacles. They will also look at other ways that information technology is used outside the classroom.
