1 Space Space is our theme for the term. The children will be involved in helping to plan how they would like to explore each theme. Their interests, needs and areas for development will direct many aspects of teaching and learning. English We will be exploring a range of stories from fantasy settings and will be using our imaginations to create our own fantasy stories. We will use a range of non-fiction texts to learn about Space. We will learn to use a contents page, index and glossary in order to locate information independently. Phonics We will continue to work on learning a range of graphemes and phonemes from Phases 3 to 5 to increase our reading and spelling skills. We will also work on our tricky word recognition. Mathematics We will explore number and place value – working on recognising, ordering and using numbers to 50 and beyond. Then the children will begin to use their knowledge of number and the number system to make multiplication and division calculations using concrete objects. We will be building on last term’s learning by length, mass and weight using standard units of measure. We will use mathematical vocabulary to describe the properties of 2d and 3d shapes. We will continue to work with money and familiairise ourselves with the coins and notes we use in the UK. Science We will observe the seasonal changes over the year in our local environment and beyond. We will also be learning about plants and flowers and their main components. We will plant seeds and bulbs and observe them grow. Geography We will continue or work on the Seasons, and identify seasonal and daily weather patterns in the UK. We will investigate the location of hot and cold areas of the world in relation to the equator and to the North and South Poles. History We will explore events beyond living memory, with a particular focus on journeys into Space. We will explore the life of Neil Armstrong and the way in which Tim Peake is making history. Art and Design We will be using our observational skills to sketch plants and flowers. We will use junk modelling to design and make our own rockets. Physical Education We will continue to work on our movement and coordination skills through the following activities: Throwing and catching, Running and jumping, Team games, Dance and Multi-skills. This will support our health and fitness, build character and help embed values such as fairness and respect. PSHCE We will be following a programme to encourage personal development and mutual understanding. This will involve exploring strategies and skills for keeping ourselves healthy and safe. We will also discuss how belonging and cooperating can help us to form a peaceful community. Computing In computing we will be continuing to use a range of programmes. We will use stop-start animation techniques to create our own Space- related stories, and continue to explore the apps available on the ipads. Music We will continue to learn and sing a range of songs from a variety of genres, including hip- hop, blues, Latin, funk baroque, Bhangra and classical. We will be using our voices with classroom percussion. Space
