WITH RICK ELDER SS360 American Women 9/11/2015 1

Meet Your Instructor 9/11/2015 Hi, my name is Rick Elder, and I will be your instructor for SS360 – American Women. This is an audio seminar. 2

I Live in Brimley, Michigan 9/11/2015 Brimley 3

My Home in Brimley, MI 9/11/2015 This house was ordered out of a Montgomery Ward’s Catalog back in 1915 (garage excepted). It arrived in Brimley by ship from Chicago and was off loaded in a now closed harbor on the shore of Lake Superior. This is your “first history lesson for this class.” 4

SS360 – American Women 9/11/ Before we get really serious about tonight’s seminar let’s take a few minutes to introduce ourselves. Would anyone like to start? Now we can get started with some of the class expectations and goals.

SS360 – American Women 9/11/2015 Now for some of the introductory topics for our class… Be Sure to Understand the Course Outcomes. Demonstrate an understanding of the course. requirements, syllabus guidelines and grading policies for this course. Discuss strategies for completing the course’s learning activities. Explain your reasons for taking this course and what you hope to learn over the next several weeks. Source: KU class web site SS360. 6

SS360 – American Women 9/11/2015 Demonstrate how socially constructed notions of gender, race, ethnicity, and class have shaped the reality of women’s lives. Discuss application of course knowledge in your professional and personal lives. Reading: You will read Kaplan Library and review the course syllabus. You will also read the Introduction to Through Women’s Eyes. This starts on page xxvii and ends on page xxxv. Source: KU class web site SS360. 7

SS360 – American Women 9/11/2015 If you haven’t done so yet I suggest you take the World of Humanities Tour by clicking on the icon which looks like a globe it two hands. It does a great job of explaining why the study of humanities courses like this one is important. 8

SS360 – American Women 9/11/2015 Let’s now take some time to discuss your projects (papers), and your final project (term paper). The syllabus explains this all pretty clearly. Have all of you read the syllabus yet? If not please do. Is everyone clear about what APA formatting is? If not please look into the information contained on the Kaplan Writing Center site. Our next slide is specific to the final project. 9

SS360 – American Women 9/11/2015 Your final project for this class is very important and everyone needs to pick a topic by the end of Week 3. Please me for approval before you start writing on your topic. 10

SS340 - Am. Business Hist. 9/11/ Some suggested topics … Women at work – Lowell Mills or the Triangle Shirtwaist Company. Women in the military – The Women’s Army Corps. Mary Ritter Beard, Molly Pitcher, Dolly Madison, Sally Hemmings, Immigrant Women, Native American Women such as Sacajawea, and Pocahontas. Margaret Sanger and early efforts at birth control. Susan B. Antony and women’s suffrage and so many more. These are just a few suggestions.

SS360 – American Women 9/11/ Your Final Project will be a research project on a topic of you own choosing. The topic should be based on the readings and discussions of this course. Materials and readings assigned in this course may help you define a research question or topic, but may not be used as sources in the final project. The aim is to produce an intelligent and well-researched interpretation of women's history.

SS360 – American Women 9/11/ You must use at least three primary sources and three secondary sources. Encyclopedias (either print or online), including Wikipedia, are not acceptable secondary sources. Remember to express your own interpretation of your topic; your paper should not simply summarize the views of other authors but should put forth a creative reinterpretation of the facts supported with evidence from your sources. Source: KU class web site SS360.

SS360 – American Women 9/11/ When choosing your topic and while you are writing, remember that you need to focus on the philosophical, literary, and artistic contributions to the history of American women of the person, event, group of people, or theme that you have selected. It is not sufficient to simply describe the person’s accomplishments or to provide a list of occurrences, you must analyze their significance. Your topic must be cleared by your instructor no later than the end of Unit 3. This paper must be a minimum of 8 to 10 pages, including the bibliography. Use the APA form of citation for your paper. The Final Project will be due no later than the last day of Unit 9. Source: KU class web site SS360.

SS360 – American Women 9/11/ Throughout this course, many discussion opportunities come up where you need to respond to other people's opinions and comments. Please take this opportunity to introduce yourself and to learn something about each other. Be sure to include the following information: Your name and why you signed up for American Women. Any prior knowledge you may have about this topic. Your current and/or future educational goals. This is a graded discussion and be sure to respond to two of your classmates as well as make an original posting. Source: KU class web site SS360.

SS360 – American Women 9/11/ How you think American Women will help you attain your goals? How you plan to succeed in completing the course assignments? Take time to review the responses of your classmates and provide your feedback. Be sure to reply to two students for posts other than this one. Source: KU class web site SS360.

SS360 – American Women 9/11/ This week’s seminar question… Why do you think it is important to study the history of American women? In the Introduction to Through Women’s Eyes, the authors identify three integrating themes or categories in women’ s history. Which do you find the most interesting and why? The three integrating themes are … Source: KU class web site SS360.

SS360 – American Women 9/11/ Work and the Sexual Division of Labor. 2. Gender and the Meaning of Politics. 3. The Role of Family and Personal Life.

SS360 – American Women 9/11/ Your book talks about Mary Beard. Does anyone know who she was? She was an early feminist and prominent historian. She was married to Charles Beard who was an eminent historian and professor in the early 1900’s.

SS360 – American Women 9/11/ Mary Ritter Beard (August 5, 1876, Indianapolis, Indiana – August 14, 1958) was an American historian and archivist, who played an important role in the women's suffrage movement and was a life-long advocate for social justice through educational and activist roles in both the labor and woman's rights movements. She wrote several books on women's role in history including On Understanding Women (1931), (Ed.) America Through Women's Eyes (1933) and Woman As Force In History: A Study in Traditions and Realities (1946). SS360 – American Women 9/11/ Looking ahead to next week now … Your first graded written project is due for Unit 2. There is a written project that will be due about the issue of freedom and early American women. You will complete a 1-2 page project on this question. Remember to look at the sample project I have provided. No title page is required, but be sure to put your name on the project and follow standard APA formatting which requires page numbers.

SS360 – American Women 9/11/ For Unit 2 you will need to read - Chapters 1 and 2, "America in the World: To 1650" and "Colonial Worlds, " in Through Women's Eyes. You should read everything, including all primary source documents. Also, pay particular attention to the illustrations. Source: KU class web site SS360.

SS360 – American Women 9/11/ I hope you have enjoyed our first seminar, and I look forward to reading your Discussion Board responses this week. This is it for this week. Have a good week and we will chat again next Wednesday. Rick Elder, KU
