What is collaboration? Being skillful at working in teams is something employers expect of you in the workplace and, increasingly, teamwork happens virtually. So see this as an opportunity to get one up on your future competition and, at the risk of being cliché, two brains are always better than one. Everyone learns more when we come together and learn as a team. There are two types of collaboration: synchronous and asynchronous. Synchronous collaboration is communication that occurs at the same time. Things like instant messaging, chat, web conferences, or even just talking on the phone. Asynchronous collaboration, on the other hand, is communication that does not occur at the same time. Think online discussion boards or email. You are communicating synchronously and asynchronously everyday with your friends and your family, and now you’ll begin to do the same with your online classmates. As you begin this new venture, it will be important to keep a few things in mind in order to be an effective team member: First, be in the know. If you don’t do it now, get in the habit of checking your course email several times a week and replying to emails in a timely manner. Be there. Attend all meetings and while you are there, make sure you fully participate and give your best effort. Be clear. Communicate with your group both in meetings as well as with asynchronous communication. Be on time. When working on your part of the assignment, meet your deadlines. Be happy. Keep up that positive attitude and enjoy meeting students from all over the state and beyond.

Collaboration Objectives As part of our learning community, your goals should be to: “Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress, working together is success.” -Henry Ford (American founder of the Ford Motor Company and father of modern assembly lines used in mass production) Work effectively and respectfully with your team. Be flexible and willing to make necessary compromises to accomplish a common goal. Assume shared responsibility for collaborative work, and value the individual contributions made by each team member.

Election statistics Voting Eligible Population: 212,720,027 Voter Turnout: 131,304,731 2008 Turnout: 61.7% Source: United States Election Project, George Mason University

Why don’t eligible voters vote?

Our task …. 1.Explain the procedures and requirements for voter registration in your state. 2.Explain the procedures for voting in your community (from polling locations to casting a vote). 3. Post next election dates for your state and community. 4. Must persuasively encourage citizens to register and to vote. Create a Website, Commercial or Podcast.

How will I be graded? Do not simply submit a typewritten paper. Get creative and go with a political theme. Final product should be professional in nature and organized, with no spelling or grammar errors.

6.04 Reflection Questions How does the product you created encourage citizens to vote? What obstacles did you encounter when researching and developing your product? Would you recommend any changes in the voter registration procedures you researched? If so, what would you recommend? Based on your research, what do you think should be done to increase voter registration in the United States?

Research Tips! Be sure to use reliable sources. - Don’t start from scratch - refer to the links provided in your lesson. - Remember, the information on Wikipedia can be changed by anyone. Use a back up source! Don’t forget to cite your sources. - Plagiarism is copying or using ideas or words (from another person, an online classmate, or an Internet or print source) and presenting them as your own. - Use your own words to summarize the information you located and tell your reader where you found it! Example website citation: Talbot, Ronald. "Stonehenge and You." Ancient Monuments website. http://www.msnenc.com, September 27, 2002.

What do I submit? For 6.04: 1. Submit the product your group creates. 2. Submit your answers to the 4 reflection questions. (You can find them on the activity page in 6.04) For 6.08b: - Submit your completed Collaboration Assessment Guide. (You can find it on the activity page in 6.04)

In your teams… 1. Decide on a creative product. 2.Decide on a Web 2.0 tool. 3.Decide when you will submit your product. 3.Assign jobs. 4.Share contact information and decide how and when you will communicate.

6.04 Planning 1. What will you create? 2. What tool will you use? 3. What date will you turn in your finished product? Example Jobs: Group Leader – organizes, coordinates communication Graphic Artist(s)– design final product Researcher(s) – locate information NameJobEmailPhoneTeacher
