New American Diplomacy Ch 4.3

Thursday, March 8, 2012 Daily goal: Understand America’s role in Panama’s Revolution and building the Panama Canal. Understand the Open door policy and Roosevelt Corollary. Ch4.2 Notes Analysis- Explain how Yellow Journalism caused the Spanish American War.

The fight for China

Open Door Policy Each of the European Powers wanted a sphere of Influence to control in China. The US supported the Open Door Policy, in which all countries could trade with China.

The Boxer Rebellion They began the Boxer Rebellion targeting the foreign embassies and foreigners. An international force including American troops puts down the rebellion to keep the “Open Door” to the Chinese market.

The Great White Fleet

America’s Muscle

American Diplomacy Russo-Japanese war begins over China, TR wins Nobel Peace Prize for ending and maintaining Open Door policy. America’s new Navy the “Great White Fleet” was sent around the World to demonstrate US Strength.

What are Canals good for? Cutting transportation time/costs for the military and business

Saving time and money

The Panama Canal TR wanted a canal through the Panama region of Columbia. Columbia rejects the Canal plan.

Digging the Canal to prosperity

Revolution in Panama Panamanians rebelled against Columbia and TR sent the Great White Fleet to stop Columbia from preventing Panama’s independence. The new gov’t of Panama allowed the US to build the canal.

The New Diplomacy TR added the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe doctrine that the US would intervene in Latin America to keep European nations from sending troops. Taft believed in Dollar Diplomacy-US investments in Latin America would benefit both and end European intervention.
