2 American Imperialism Philippine- American War- Filipinos guerrillas fight against American imperialism twice as many die as Spanish American War Anti-Imperialist League- Founded in 1898 to protest against the annexation of the Philippines Believed American colonization and imperialism was unjust

3 Open Door Policy (1900) Secretary of State John Hay proposed a policy that would give all nations equal trading rights in China Sphere of influence- an area which a state or organization has significant influence on another nation

4 Boxer Rebellion ( ) A rebellion started by secret Chinese societies to rid China of “foreign devils” American and European coalitions put the rebellion down -wanted to protect trade

5 Panama Canal (1903) The United States wanted a canal built through Central America for military and commercial shipping Problem: it was owned by Columbia who did not want to give it up

Many in Panama wanted independence from Columbia so the U.S. backs a revolt started by Panama rebels Canal begins after revolution, finished in 1914

U.S. policy that justified United States intervention in the affairs of Latin American nations addition to the Monroe Doctrine Great White Fleet- Roosevelt sends 16 white war ships around the world “speak softly and carry a big stick” – intimidation policy from Roosevelt
