Journal: Reflective Freewrite With the weather changing and the heating and air conditioning still in the process of being up-graded, classroom temperatures are likely to be either too hot or too cold this term. If you’re too hot, you’ll have trouble staying focused and alert—and be likely to doze off. If you’re too cold, you’re likely to be uncomfortable and not pay attention. What will be your strategy for dealing with too-hot classrooms? What will be your strategy for dealing with too-cold classrooms? Given the above, how are you likely to dress to keep yourself comfortable, alert, and focused? What should you pack in your backpack?

Discussion Responses to Questions Posed in the Freewrite: Sections 05 & 99 Given the above, how are you likely to dress to keep yourself comfortable, alert, and focused? What should you pack in your backpack? bring a hoody, thin sweater, or a light jacket (get a locker—in the Student Union Bldg--and stash your extra clothing there) for too-cold classrooms remove hats, sweaters, and jackets when you are too hot Don’t come dressed in heavy clothes you can’t take off without getting arrested Wear layers Bring a warm drink or a cool one Dress in layers Bring a little hat, thin wool socks, hand warmers or gloves; stash in locker or backpack Don’t wear hats or coats or sweaters in warm classrooms

Cornell Notes Brain science tells us that the act of writing stimulates lots of activity in your brain, so it’s a natural that you should take notes. This also explains why you should always have a starting point for writing (wondering or probing questions) and why it’s a good idea to begin work on a paper with reflective writing. This frequently leads to excellent brainstorming. The Cornell note system is simple: Lay your paper out so you have spaces for notes and annotation. Then write notes during class lectures and discussion, and while watching videos/movies. Use Cornell notes for all the assigned readings. Within 24 hours, annotate your notes.Lay your paper out annotation Cornell notes also keep you and your mind organized!

Capitalization Capitalization is derived from a Latin root word, capitis, which means head. Capitalization Although there are around rules that govern the use of capital letters, we can boil these down to 5 Rules of Thumb: 1.Capitals are always needed at the head of a sentence. 2.Capitals are always needed with proper nouns (persons and places) 3.The first person singular pronoun I is always capitalized. 4.The important words in a title of a book, article, play, video, or other creative work are always capitalized. 5.The first and last words of a title of a book, article, play, video, or other creative work are always capitalized.

Capitalization Exercise Complete the assigned exercise (a copy of the assignment is posted on the portal). Be sure to carefully read the directions. After you have completed the exercise, you will have a good idea of what the rules governing capitalization are. Annotate the notes you took in class. Due Thu., Oct. 3 rd.
