3 Reflective Freewrite & Homework Review
Take out your completed verbs-subjects worksheet, your completed blueprint, and the first (rough) draft of your reading responses so Mary can check them over while you are writing your freewrite. Examine your blueprint and the first draft of your reading response. Reflect on what it was like to write this draft. What seemed to work for you and what did not? Write freely for 5 or so minutes. Share your thoughts with a neighbor.

4 What Worked Reading the blueprint and assignment directions. Learning how to read an assignment. Cornell notes helped Summary is helpful for some folks For other folks, jotting down the main idea and going from there –and only later summarizing is the way to go.

5 What Did Not Work & What Can You Do To Get Better Results
Brainstorm session What did not work: Confusing at first, but as some folks have told me, sticking with it and reviewing helps a lot. For reflective learners, it is absolutely essential that you annotate directions and handouts. For active learners, annotation is an active thing and gets your mind going, so it is highly recommended.

6 Unity Check Review of Chapter 2, Paragraph Basics
Unity is the most important feature of any piece of organized writing, whether it is a simple paragraph, a response, an essay, or a book. Unity always begins with the main idea, which in a paragraph, is the topic sentence. The S-O-C test (Supports | Off-topic | Contradicts We’ll do the “Test Yourself” exercises (p ) in class, and you can do the three sets of exercises in your text for homework, working your way from Basic through Challenge (p )

7 Checking Your Own Work For Unity
Volunteers? We’ll use the Presenter to do a unity check, and whoever volunteers will save him or herself some homework this weekend. 

8 Verb Review What is a verb? How can you spot a verb when you see one?
An action word or a word of being (to be) This does not mean, however, that all action words are verbs . Running water filled our basement. ADJECTIVE (modifies the meaning of water) Running (To run) is his favorite form of exercise. NOUN (acts as the subject of the sentence) John was running to the store when he dropped his wallet. (VERB, part of the verb of the sentence) How can you spot a verb when you see one?

9 Homework Review Mary’s TWO-Step Sure-Fire Method for Sniffing out “the Verb” Identify and remove all prepositional phrases Change the tense of the sentence WITHOUT CHANGING THE WORDING. The verb will be the only word to change. Trickiness, of course, is always a problem in more complex sentences.

Review Chap 2, p and do ex. on p Read/annotate p and do Basic through Challenge ex. on p Revise your first set of reading responses so they are unified with clear topic sentences. Add examples where you can. Proofread your work carefully. Make sure it is formatted correctly (an MLA template is on the portal and ready for you to download, save to your flashdrive or computer, and use for all of your papers. If you do not have access to a computer and/or a printer and/or the internet, you can always come to campus and do your work here. Between the Learning Commons (the Library-Learning Success Center) and the Student Computer (AC 1451), you’ll find access to technology seven days per week. You can also use public libraries. Work that is not typed and double-spaced will not be accepted.
