2 Order of Business Friday, Oct 18 th Please put your name card on the desk. Quiz on Library Lesson Writing Groups/Attendance Workshop: Taking your response from the outline to the first draft Workshop: Review of prepositions & finding verbs & their subjects in sentences Homework review/collection

3 Library Quiz: 5 minutes 1.Regarding the ABCs of websites, explain what each letter means and why it is important to be able to figure out. 2.What do the following domain names mean?.com.edu.gov.org 3. What is the difference between a website and a webpage? 4.Extra-credit: What can you tell about a site by its URL (web address)?

4 Writing Groups: 15 minutes Please sit with your writing group today and every day ! Compare notes on your quiz results. Take turns answering questions (round robin) and come to consensus on each one. Make sure that you have contact information for each member of your group and find a time that your group can get together. If you do not have time in class to complete this task, do so right after class. I recommend that you trade email addresses and communicate the rest of your contact information by email.

5 Blueprint Workshop: 15 min Anyone want to volunteer his or her blueprint? We’ll use the presenter to review and help beef up this critical reading response Discussion in writing groups: Begin your work with each other, taking turns reviewing and discussing each blueprint. It would be a good idea if the writer explained his or her ideas first and then members of the group thoughtfully respond with respectful suggestions and positive remarks. Continue your work in your groups. Try to meet either today, over the weekend at the library, or on Monday.

6 Prepositional Phrase Review Examine your preposition worksheet and review your work with your group. Mary will circulate around the room, check off your homework, and answer questions. More questions? See Mary after class.

7 Verbs in Sentences Verbs give life to a sentence. Reflect for a moment on what you can recall about verbs. Jot down a list of what you remember. Work with one or two other folks and compare notes. Put your lists together. Class discussion: What is a verb?.

8 Verbs: A Class Discussion What is a verb? An action word or a word of being (to be) This does not mean, however, that all action words are verbs. 1.Running water filled our basement. ADJECTIVE (modifies the meaning of water) 2.Running (To run) is his favorite form of exercise. NOUN (acts as the subject of the sentence) 3.John was running to the store when he dropped his wallet. (VERB, part of the verb of the sentence) How can you spot a verb when you see one?

9 Mary’s Two-Step Sure-Fire Method for Sniffing out “the Verb” Handout & Workshop 1.Identify and remove all prepositional phrases 2.Change the tense of the sentence WITHOUT CHANGING THE WORDING. The verb will be the only word to change. 3.Trickiness, of course, is always a problem in more complex sentences.

10 Homework Due, Tuesday, Oct. 22 nd – Prepare a first draft for all three responses: reaction, critical, and reflective. This should be typed and double or triple spaced so we can work on it in class. – Complete the Finding Verbs and Their Subjects in Sentences worksheet
