Unity in Writing: Review of Tuesday’s Lesson What is unity? Please freewrite for a few minutes about what comes to mind when you think about something as unified.unity Unity is an interesting word. It comes from combining a root word, uni-, and a suffix (-ity). unus (one in Latin) unus -ity (having the quality of being) -ity Put these two roots together, and you have the meaning of unity as the quality of being one. In writing, unity means pretty much the same thing: all ideas in an organized piece of writing support the central ideas, the thesis, which binds the entire essay together, and the topic sentence, which binds the paragraph together. Topic sentences do some really heavy lifting in organized writing. The topic sentence binds the paragraph into one unit, and it ties the paragraph to the thesis.

Unity Review Assignment You were assigned to examine a paragraph and evaluate it for unity. We noted that it definitely had unity problems when we read it through. 1.You were to find the topic sentence of the paragraph. It should have been the main idea, that is, what the paragraph is all about. You were to label this sentence with TS (topic sentence) 2.Then you were to systematically measure each sentence against the topic sentence. You were to label each sentence in the paragraph as Supporting the TS, Off-topic, or Contradicting the TS Label each sentence as S, O, or C.

Sgt. Pepper Today, I want you to work with one or two other people and compare your labeling. Note sentences on which you did not agree as well as the sentences on which you did agree. Discuss why you labeled each sentence as you did. Class discussion and unity deconstruction of “Sgt. Pepper” Review your own paper for level 1 (essay level) unity. Label your thesis statement and your topic sentences. Perform a Level 1 unity review. Review your own paper for level 2 (paragraph level) unity. Label each sentence of each paragraph as you did in the Sgt. Pepper exercise

Phrases & Clauses What is a phrase? A group of related words without a subject and a verb. Prepositional phrase, (all kinds), verbal phrases (all kinds), noun phrase appositives What is a clause? A group of related words with a subject and a verb. In-class practice:

Clauses Why it’s important to be able to recognize clauses: 1.Clauses look like sentences, but some clauses are NOT sentences. These kinds of sentence errors are among them most serious writing errors because they are very confusing to the reader. 2.There are so many different kinds of phrases (prepositional phrases, noun phrase appositives, and different kinds of verb phrases), sometimes it’s easier just to learn what clauses are and go from there. (p. 77) 3.Knowing how to combine different kinds of clauses is essential to being able to write about complex ideas.
