3 Reflective Quiz Directions: In the following sentences: (a) Cross out the prepositional phrases; (b) Underline the main verb or verbs; and (c) Double underline the subject or subjects. You may use your notes and the list of prepositions in your course packet (p. 71). Walking to the store, John dropped his wallet on the sidewalk, but he did not discover this until he was in the checkout line. The office in the back of the storeroom of Kayla’s Portland store on East Burnside developed cracks in the outside wall, allowing rain to seep in. Registration had been open for three weeks before many students really got serious about selecting a schedule, and then, to their dismay, they found many sections of the courses they need with wait lists!

7 Unity Review of Essay 2 Work with in groups of 2-3 to check the degree of unity in each of your body paragraphs. Underline your topic sentences. Trade papers with a member of your group. Systematically check each sentence in each body paragraph for unity by labeling each as S (supports), O (off-topic), or C (contradicts) the topic sentence. Discuss your findings with each other, and chat about how you improve unity in your next revision. Specifically, what needs to be changed: the topic sentence or the body sentences? Why?

8 Topic Sentences Many of you probably noted that one or more of your body paragraphs lack a topic sentences. Let’s look at p in your course packet. Please take notes!

10 Homework Due Wed, Nov. 9th Read / annotate: p in your course packet. Complete: Ex. 1, p Prepare: 3 Roots of Meaning Worksheet using the Common Anglo-Saxon Root Words handout. You must use one root word, one prefix, and one suffix. As we discussed in class, the list of Anglo-Saxon / Germanic word roots contains three different types of roots—Basic Root Words, Prefixes, and Suffixes. Select one root word, one prefix and one suffix. Enter it into the search box on and look for words containing the root, suffix, or prefix. Select one word and use this word on your roots of meaning worksheet. In this manner you will complete three worksheets. Bring all three to class on Wed. Improve: your topic sentences and body paragraphs: Your TS’s should be broad enough to include all the ideas in your paragraph. Your TS’s should be narrow enough to focus the paragraph. Your TS’s should develop your thesis statement. Make sure: that you use at least one example in each paragraph.
